Wiley, Bureau each notch first career point

WINCHENDON, Mass. (November 19, 2012) – Freshman forwards Karsyn Baker (Detroit, Mich.) and Colleen Doucette (Wakefield, Mass.) tallied a goal and an assist each on Monday night, but the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team was defeated, 4-2, by Saint Anselm at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. Junior forward Courtney Winters scored twice and added an assist in the win for Saint Anselm.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-5-0, while Saint Anselm improves to 6-1-1 (4-1-1). Both teams showed proficiency on the man-advantage, as each side went 2-for-5 on the power play. Saint Anselm, which held a 31-19 advantage in shots on goal, is expected to be among the toughest foes on Franklin Pierce's inaugural season schedule. The Hawks defeated Division III No. 1 nationally ranked Norwich over the weekend.

After the first period went without a goal, Saint Anselm opened the scoring with a power-play marker at the 7:35 mark of the second stanza. Working behind the net, senior forward Kathryn Picarello sent a pass out on the left-wing side of the cage and found Winters camped in the slot, and she one-timed home her third goal of the season. Winters would strike again on a similar play at the 10:03 mark. This time, sophomore forward Tiffany Herron cut behind the net, headed towards the right-wing corner. Once she had the angle, she flipped a pass into the slot to Winters, who finished her second goal of the night. Herron had assisted on the first goal as well, while freshman forward Sarah Geisinger provided the secondary assist on the second score.

The Hawks stretched the lead as high as 3-0 with a power-play marker at the 12:18 mark. After being knocked around in the slot, a loose puck fell in front of the left post. Picarello was on the scene to jam home her fifth goal of the campaign. Winters and junior defenseman Jacqueline Bouchie were credited with the assists.

The Ravens got on the board to cut the lead to 3-1 heading into the second intermission with a power-play goal at 15:29. After being set up on a charge through the slot by Doucette and junior forward Jamie Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.), Baker's initial shot was stymied by Saint Anselm sophomore goaltender Janice Michaud. The rebound, however, fell right back to Baker's stick and she didn't miss the second time, putting her third goal of the season to the back of the net. For Wiley, the assist was the first point of her collegiate career.

Franklin Pierce would make it a one-goal game with another power-play tally, this one at the 7:42 mark of the third. Baker again took the initial shot and was again turned away by Michaud. This time, the rebound found Doucette, who collected her third goal of the season. Freshman defenseman Samantha Bureau (Ottawa, Ontario) picked up an assist to tally her first career point.

Saint Anselm added an insurance goal at 12:45 to create the 4-2 final. After taking passes from Picarello and freshman defenseman Kelsey Patten, senior forward Rosmarie Giarrusso had the puck in the right-wing corner, moving away from the goal line up towards the halfboards. She quickly spun off the wall, into the right circle and snapped a shot into the top corner for her sixth goal of the season.

Junior goaltender Amelea Gray (Bozeman, Mont.) stopped 27 of the 31 shots sent her way and took the loss (1-5-0) in net for Franklin Pierce. Michaud made 17 saves against 19 shots on goal at her end to pick up the win (2-0-0) between the pipes for Saint Anselm.

The Ravens return to the ice on Friday, Nov. 30, when they remain home to host University of New England. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
