Women’s Golf Runs Away with Senior Showdown at Stonehill

Kesinee Prukmathakul

SOUTHWICK, Mass. (April 25, 2022) -- Out in front by 24 shots after Sunday's first round, the Franklin Pierce University women's golf team barely slowed down on Monday, at the final round of the Senior Showdown, hosted by Stonehill. The Ravens fared five shots worse than Sunday, but were still 17 strokes better than their closest competition to finish off a 48-stroke victory atop a four-team field. Freshman Kesinee Prukmathakul (Bangkok, Thailand) matched her opening-round score with a second-round 74 (+2) to lead the team individually, in third place. The Senior Showdown was contested at The Ranch Golf Club, a par-72, 5822-yard track.

In their final tune-up before next week's NCAA Championship, the Ravens boasted three of the top five finishers in the 23-golfer field. Prukmathakul went 74-74--148 (+4) to finish solo-third, four shots off the lead. Fellow Thai freshman Phisonlaya Ruayruen (Chiangmai, Thailand) checked in at 72-78--150 (+6) to take third, while junior Alia Godek (Feeding Hills, Mass.) finished fourth with a line of 77-75--152 (+8). Sophomore Kayla Schuberth (Wrentham, Mass.) was tied-seventh at 78-81--159 (+15). Junior Micaela Leandro (Harlingen, Texas) did not post an individual finish, as she missed Sunday's first round, but did factor into Monday's team score with a second-round 79 (+7).

Monday's best four added up to 306 strokes (+18) for the Ravens, who ran away with first place with a line of 301-306--607 (+31). It was 48 shots back to second-place Adelphi at 325-330--655 (+79), while Saint Rose finished third at 334-332--666 (+90). Host Stonehill rounded out a field composed solely of Northeast-10 Conference teams in fourth at 347-323--670 (+94).

Individually, Adelphi sophomore Ilaria Ponziani converted a three-shot first-round lead into a two-shot victory, with a line of 69-75--144 (E). The even-par score for 36 holes was good enough to hold off Saint Rose sophomore Erika Fuentes at 75-71--146 (+2), as she took second in front of the 3-4-5 Franklin Pierce trio of Prukmathakul, Ruayruen and Godek.

Next up for the Ravens is the NCAA Championship East Regional, set for May 2-4 at Shoal Creek Golf Club in Kansas City. Franklin Pierce is assured an automatic bid as the NE10 champion. The full, 48-team field will be announced later Monday.
