Women’s Golf Improves on Second Day at NCAA Championship East Regional

CARMEL, Ind. (May 4, 2021) - It was a 13-shot improvement on Wednesday for the Franklin Pierce University women's golf team, at the second day of the NCAA Championship East Regional. Graduate student Zoey Yamamoto (Honolulu, Hawaii) was eight shots better from the first to second round, as she paced the Ravens on the second day of the three-day tournament with a 79 (+7). As a team, Franklin Pierce is eighth with one round remaining, with a two-day score of 665 (+89). The East Regional is being hosted by the University of Indianapolis at the par-72 Prairie View Golf Club, which checks in at 6181 yards.

Sophomore Alia Godek (Feeding Hills, Mass.) also improved by eight shots from Tuesday to Wednesday, as she was two shots behind Yamamoto with an 81 (+9). The three other Ravens were also in the 80s on Wednesday in the Hoosier State, as freshman Kayla Schuberth (Wrentham, Mass.) and graduate student Taylor Hartley (Las Vegas, Nev.) both carded second-round 83s (+11), while sophomore Micaela Leandro (Harlingen, Texas) turned in an 87 (+15). It all added up to a Round Two total of 326 (+38) and a two-day total of 665 (+89) for the Ravens.

"I'm really proud of how our girls responded today after a tough day yesterday," said head coach Tyler Bishop '08, '10 after the round. "We lowered our score by 13 strokes, and we are hoping to improve upon that tomorrow and finish strong."

Through two days of play at the East Regional, Schuberth, Hartley and Yamamoto are one behind the other, at 164 (+20), 165 (+21) and 166 (+22), respectively. Schuberth is tied for 31st in the 48-golfer field, Hartley tied for 34th and Yamamoto is tied for 36th. Godek is currently tied for 39th with a 170 (+26), while Leandro is 47th with a 185 (+41).

The Ravens head into the third and final round six shots in back of seventh-place Gannon at 659 (+83) and seven shots behind sixth-place Wayne State (Mich.) at 658 (+82). Franklin Pierce is seven shots clear of ninth-place Charleston at 672 (+96). The Ravens made up 11 shots on Wayne State and 13 shots on Charleston on Wednesday.

At the top of the field, host UIndy is poised for a return to the national tournament, as the Greyhounds are 10 shots clear of the field at 589 (+13). Findlay is second at 599 (+23) and Grand Valley State is third at 607 (+31).

Individually, two of the first-round tri-leaders remain tied atop the leaderboard, as Findlay junior Jill Schmitmeyer and UIndy junior Cailyn Henderson both turned in second-round 73s (+1) to post two-day totals of 145 (+1). Missouri-Saint Louis senior Emma Thorngren had shared the first-round lead as well, but tumbled all the way down to tied-ninth at 150 (+6) after a second-day 78 (+6). GVSU senior Katie Chipman is third at 146 (+2), while Findlay senior Meredith Wipper and GVSU freshman Megan Miron round out the top five in a tie for fourth at 148 (+4).

East Regional competition will conclude on Wednesday at Prairie View Golf Club.
