Ravens Finish in Second at Golden Bear Classic

READING, Pa. (February 12, 2017) – The no. 20 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University women's bowling team finished in second place during the Golden Bear Classic hosted by Kutztown University on Sunday afternoon.

FPU finished the trip with a 9-4 mark and currently stand at 41-27 (.603) on the season. The Ravens finished in 2nd place of 12 teams with a total pinfall of 9,797. Duquesne University finished atop the standings with a 10-3 weekend mark and a 9,563 pinfall while East Coast Conference opponent and no. 16 nationally-ranked Adelphi placed third at 11-2 and a 10,407 pinfall. Adelphi was locked in the first spot all weekend until a loss to Duquesne in bracket play knocked them out of contention for first.

Raven junior bowler Jessica Davies (Cape Coral, Fla.) was named to the All-Tournament team as she racked up a weekend baker average of 18.56.

Day One – Friday

The Ravens were 3-2 on the first day of bowling and were victorious against Saint Peter's (922-834), Chestnut Hill (924-894) and Wilmington (881-743). Their two setback came at the hands of Coppin State (838-816) in the first match of the day and versus East Coast Conference opponent no. 16 nationally-ranked Adelphi (934-883).

In the win over Saint Peter's Krysta Peirce (Lenox, Mich.), Alexa Asta (Jackson, N.J.), Meggin Brooks (Rotterdam, N.Y.), Colleen Kelly (Quincy, Mass.) and Nicolette Vucak (Garfield, N.J.) knocked down a day one high 216 pins in the second game of the five game match.

Individually, Peirce recorded the Ravens top baker frame average (18.96) and Asta followed with an 18.2 baker average.

Day Two – Saturday

The squad finished 4-1 on the second day of competition wins over Duquesne (949-840), Kutztown (901-830), Caldwell (929-864) and Felician (958-830). The Ravens lone loss came at the hands of Morgan State in extra frames (856-856, 82-84).

The Ravens highest single match score came in the win over Caldwell as Jenna Harrington (Barneveld, N.Y.), Asta, Sarah Busse (Commack, N.Y.), Vucak and Davies combined to roll a 208 in the victory. Versus Felician, they also recorded their highest total pinfall of the day at 958.

After the completion of day two, the Ravens increased their standing by jumping two spots from fourth to second place at 7-3 with a pinfall of 8,919.

Day Three – Sunday

The squad carried their momentum into Sunday where they combined to go 2-1 with a win over Roberts Wesleyan (878-689) before heading into the bracket matches. In the semifinals, the no. 2 seed Ravens took on no. 3 seed Morgan State and earned a 4-1 victory. Busse, Asta, Peirce, Vucak and Davies recorded a weekend single match high score of 243 in the clinching game.

FPU advanced on to the championship game to face off against Duquense who the Ravens handed a loss to on Saturday, a (949-840) decision. The best of seven series went the distance as the Dukes won by a 4-3 score in seven games.

The Ravens have a brief layoff before they return to action on the weekend of March 3-5 at the Hawk Flight Invite hosted by Monmouth University at the King Pin.
