INDIANAPOLIS (July 28, 2016) – Earlier this month, five members of the Franklin Pierce University bowling team traveled to Indianapolis to compete for a spot on Junior Team USA at the Junior Gold Championships.

Rising sophomore Sarah Busse (Commack, N.Y.) returned to Junior Gold for a third consecutive year, as she finished with an average of 163.75, which put her in 421st place. This past winter, Busse finished her freshman year with a 172 average and consistently started as the team's leadoff bowler.

Along with Busse, four incoming freshman had their eyes set on one of the spots for Junior Team USA: Krysta Peirce (Lenox, Mich.), Jenna Harrington (Barneveld, N.Y.), Erin Mastropietro (Mechanicville, N.Y.) and Katey Comstock (White River Junction, Vt.).

Out of 792 bowlers, Peirce put on the best performance for Franklin Pierce, as she finished with a four-day, 16-game average of 177.69, to tie for 140th place. Earlier this year, Peirce won the 1st Annual Turbo Tech Collegiate Expo Challenge. Close behind Peirce was Comstock, with a 176 average, to tie for 167th. Her most recent accomplishment was becoming the New England champion in discus this past June, and she will also be a member of the Ravens track & field team. Harrington bowled an average of 164.88 to tie for 393rd. In March, she was named United States Bowling Congress Youth Ambassador of the Year and was featured in the June 2016 issue of Bowlers Journal. Mastropietro bowled herself a 153.13 to tie for 628th. She helped lead Mechanicville High School to five straight sectional titles.

The Junior Gold Championships are an annual collection of national tournaments for the top male and female youth bowlers in the United States. The tournament awards scholarships, while youth bowlers competing in the U20 and U15 divisions also have the opportunity to earn a spot on Junior Team USA. The tournament has six divisions: U12 Boys, U12 Girls, U15 Boys, U15 Girls, U20 Boys and U20 Girls.
