Women's Basketball: Ravens Fall in NE10 Semifinal to Bentley, 66-57

WALTHAM, MA (3/7/24) – The Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team's nine game winning streak ended Thursday evening during the Northeast-10 semifinals against the number one seeded Bentley Falcons, 66-57.

Score: Franklin Pierce 57, Bentley 66. 
Records: Franklin Pierce 20-10 (13-9 NE10), Bentley 25-5 (18-4 NE10).

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Ravens started the game strong, taking a 20-14 lead in the first ten minutes. Sophomore guard Kenzie Sirowich (Seymour, CT) and senior forward Colette Mulderig (Scranton, PA) combined for 16 of the Ravens' first 20 points, leading the offense inside the paint.  
  • The second quarter was closer than the first, with the Falcons outscoring the Ravens 16-14 in the frame. Bentley sophomore forward Ciara Norman scored 6 points for the Falcons, putting them within 4 points as the Ravens led 34-30 at half. 
  • Late in the second quarter, Senior forward Colette Mulderig was given a technical foul which put her into foul trouble early. Head coach Mark Swasey then substituted her with sophomore forward Laia Llorente (Madrid, Spain) for the majority of the second half.  
  •  The Falcon's offense surged in the second half as they took their first lead in the 3rd quarter 46-44. They then continued their offensive attack extending to a 15-2 run halfway through the 4th quarter taking a commanding 57-46 lead. During the run, the Falcons made 4 three-point shots, with Falcons senior guard Maggie Whitmore and junior guard Amanda Kabantu each making a pair.  
  • Despite a counter-offensive by the Ravens, they ultimately came up short, ending their season with a 20-10 record (13-9 NE10).  

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS: 

  • Both teams shot similarly from the field, with the advantage going to Bentley. The Ravens made 41% of their shots to the Falcons 46%. 
  • The difference was in 3-point field goals: The Ravens only completed 18% from beyond the arc, making just 2 of 11 attempts, while the Falcons shot 44% from the 3-point line, making 7 of 16 attempts. 
  • The Falcons out-rebounded the Ravens 30-27. However, the Ravens won the turnover battle, forcing 12 to the Falcons 11.  

 

UP NEXT FOR THE RAVENS: The loss ends the Ravens' playoff run, however, their season will continue in the East regional tournament.  They entered Thursday night's game ranked 4th in the East Region and their next matchup has yet to be determined.
