Ravens Fall in Conference Duel to Setters

RINDGE, N.H. (January 25, 2017) – Sophomore guard Sarah Middleton (Barrington, R.I.) filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, a game-high six assists, two rebounds and a steal as the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team dropped a 62-51 contest to Northeast-10 Conference opponent Pace University on Wednesday evening in The Fieldhouse. With the win, the Setters improve to 10-11, 4-9 NE10 and the loss was the Ravens 16th overall and their 13th in league play.

Fellow guard, freshman Cameryn Wilson (Newport News, Va.) matched Middleton's team-high point total with 12 markers of her own. Wilson also dished out four assists and snagged three boards. Dana Campbell (Merrick, N.Y.) scored in double-figures with 10 points while grabbing two caroms. Jemma Thacker (Nairne, South Australia) added nine points, six rebounds and four steals. Mikayla Deguire (Watervilet, N.Y.) came down with a team-high seven rebounds.

For the Setters, Alexandra Monteleone led the way with a game-high 15 points while grabbing seven boards. Senior center Kirsten Dodge scored 13 points and tallied a game-best nine caroms. Stefanie Svoboda also entered double figures with 11 points.

Pace held the advantage down low as they outscored FPU 32 to 24 in the painted area. The Setters also led wire to wire, never ceasing the lead to the hosts.

The Setters racked up six straight points to begin the game with Svoboda ripping the rock away from a Raven player and going coast to coast for the fast break lay-in for the opening points of the contest. Franklin Pierce wouldn't tally a point until the 5:02 mark when Middleton took a feed from Wilson, slashed through the paint and picked up the hoop and harm. Middleton's and1 cut the deficit to three at 6-3.

Svoboda manufactured a corner trey off a catch and shoot from Monteleone which gave the guests their largest lead of the first, 13-5. Deguire brought the deficit to two possessions with 18 ticks left with a layup down on the low block which made the score 15-10 at the end of one.

About 1:15 into the second stanza, Wilson threw a cross court pass to Thacker who was waiting on the right wing and the junior connected on a three which made the score 15-13 in favor of the Setters. The guests responded with a 14-4 scoring run to turn a two point lead into a 12 point advantage after a layup by Christina Rubin. The Ravens then added five straight off a Wilson layup and a Campbell corner connection from deep off a Middleton pass to go into the half down 29-22.

The visitors built their seven point halftime lead to a game-high 13 as they began the second half the way they started the game with six points in a row as Dodge notched two freebies to put her squad ahead 35-22. Franklin Pierce came within one possession by using a 11-3 run as Thacker capped the scoring with a corner three dished by Wilson which made the score 38-35. Svoboda matched Thacker's three with a bank three from the top of the point to increase the lead to six, 41-35. With 15 seconds remaining, Dodge converted a layup to bring the advantage back to eight, 43-35 at the end of three.

Dodge opened the fourth with a layup to push the Setters advantage up to double figures. Five in a row by the Ravens off a Thacker three-ball and a Middleton layup after a Thacker steal made it a two possession game at 45-40 with 9:22 left.

That was the closest the Ravens would come as the Setters outscored the Ravens 8-2 over the next four minutes to put Pace ahead 53-42 and the visitors eventually held on to a 62-51 win.

The Ravens return to the hardwood on Saturday when they welcome NE10 opponent Le Moyne to campus for a 1:30 p.m. duel.
