Lady Ravens Begin Conference Slate With Loss to SMC

COLCHESTER, Vt. (November 16, 2016) – The Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team wrapped up their three game road trip with a 69-53 loss to Northeast-10 Conference opponent Saint Michael's College on Wednesday evening at the Ross Sports Center. With the win, the Purple Knights move to 1-2, 1-0 NE-10 and the loss drops the Ravens to 1-2, 0-1 NE-10.

Senior guard Dana Campbell (Merrick, N.Y.) led the way for FPU with 16 points and six rebounds in 35 minutes. Teammate Cameryn Wilson (Newport News, Va.) tallied 10 points off the bench and Sarah Middleton (Barrington, R.I.) added eight points, a team-best five assists and three caroms. Forward Alison Palma (Stamford, Conn.) snagged a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with eight points.

The Purple Knights converted 50% (27-of-54) of their field goal attempts compared to the Ravens 36.1% (22-of-61) efficiency from the floor. The hosts also scored 27 points of 20 Raven turnovers.

Saint Michael's jumped out to a 14-4 lead only three minutes into the contest as Emily Ferreri poured in a jumper doled out by Leah Spencer. The Crimson and Grey cut the 10 point deficit to a six point hole with 3:20 remaining in the quarter after a Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) layup. The Purple Knights brought the lead back up to double figures, however Campbell buried a jumper with five seconds left in the quarter to head into the second stanza down 22-14.

A 6-1 mini-run by SMC increased the lead to a first half high of 13 at 28-15 thanks to an old fashioned three point play from Maddy Bennett. Trailing 30-17, the Ravens ended the half on a 13-0 run with Campbell, Kelsey Mayo (Oakland, Maine), Middleton, Wilson, Mosley all scoring buckets and one Palma free throw knotted up the score at the intermission.

The Ravens gained their only lead nine seconds into the half with a Middleton lay-in from the low post. FPU's lead was short-lived as Indira Evora knocked down a shot from long range on the next possession. SMC built a six point lead midway through the quarter and the Ravens came within one point as Mayo put in an and-1 play. The Purple Knights outscored the Ravens 12-5 over the final minutes of the quarter to head into the fourth up eight, 52-44.

A Middleton Layup with 8:11 left to play brought the Purple Knight's lead to seven, however a 13-2 run over the rest of the quarter ended the hopes of a Raven comeback.

Franklin Pierce will return to the hardwood on Saturday when they face off against Bentley at 4:00 p.m.
