12-0 Run Late in Fourth Quarter Dooms Ravens

PHILADELPHIA (November 12, 2016) – The Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team had the lead throughout three quarters of play on Saturday, but couldn't hold on as they dropped the second game of the young season 60-55 to non-conference opponent University of the Sciences. The loss drops the Crimson and Grey to .500 at 1-1 and the win keeps the Devils undefeated at 2-0.

The Ravens held a six point advantage heading into the fourth quarter, but shot only 3-of-13 (23.1%) from the hardwood and were outscored by a 19-8 margin. Senior guard Dana Campbell (Merrick, N.Y.) led the way with a team-high 14 points. Classmate Alison Palma (Stamford, Conn.) chipped in nine points to go along with a team-best seven caroms and three assists. Sophomore Sarah Middleton (Barrington, R.I.) tallied six points, dished out eight helpers, came up with four steals and snagged three boards in the setback.

The Ravens trailed for the majority of the first stanza before Jemma Thacker (Nairne, South Australia) tied up the contest at five all with a three-ball, a few possessions later Palma gave FPU their first lead of the afternoon by splitting a pair of free throws. Laura Trisch stole the rock from the Ravens and pushed the ball coast to coast for two which put the hosts up 7-6 with 4:47 left in the first.

FPU scored six straight to take a 12-7 lead as Mikayla Deguire (Watervilet, N.Y.) put home two layups during the mini run. Following a Molly Greenberg free throw Marissa Sylvester buried a three ball to cut their deficit to one, 12-11 with 2:45 left. On the Ravens next trip down the court, Thacker responded with a three of her own to bring the lead back up to four for the Crimson and Grey. Both teams would remain scoreless through the remaining 2:33 of the period.

In the second quarter the Devils got within two twice as Sarah Abbonizio poured in a shot from long range. Dana Campbell matched Abbonizio's three with one of her own to push the Ravens lead back up to five, 24-19. With 55 seconds left in the half, Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) converted a layup to give the Crimson and Grey their largest lead of the first half at 34-28. A few seconds later, Mikaela Giuliani spit a pair of freebies to end the first half of play.

The Ravens started the third quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 12 point, 41-29 lead. Midway through the quarter, the Devils used a 7-2 run with the key basket being a Laura Trisch three pointer to crawl back into the game at 43-39. Middleton hit a free throw with one second left to put the Ravens up by two possessions 47-41 heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth, both squads matched each other's scores before Campbell connected on a shot from downtown to put FPU up 55-48 with 5:25 left. Over the final five and a half minutes, USciences held the Ravens scoreless while putting up 12 points to take the contest.
