Women’s Basketball Unable to Hold First-Half Lead Against SNHU, Falls 67-58

Rindge, N.H. (November 24, 2015) -- Tied through three quarters on Tuesday evening, a slow start to the fourth quarter ultimately doomed the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team in the Fieldhouse. Southern New Hampshire scored the first eight points of the final period to post a 67-58 win in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, the Ravens fall to an overall record of 1-2, and 1-2 in the Northeast-10, while the Penmen advance to a 5-0 record and 2-0 in conference.

In the first quarter, the Ravens were first on the board with a layup by senior forward Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass.), followed by junior forward Alison Palma (Stamford, Conn.) hitting a jumper and senior guard Natalie Bastian (Branford, Conn.) sinking a three-point shot would set the Ravens up to head into the second quarter leading the Penmen 20-15.

As the second quarter got underway Southern New Hampshire had a 9-2 scoring run, leaving the Ravens trailing by two points (28-26) with just under five minutes left in the half. Charette was able to tie the game with a layup, and later, senior guard Dyamond Gardner (Cambridge, Mass.) recovered a Penmen turnover with 57 seconds left she sent a long fast break pass to junior guard Jasmyne Fogle (Bridgeport, Conn.) to put the Ravens up 34-31. The Penmen were only able to get one more basket before the first half would expire.

In the third quarter, the Ravens took advantage of Penmen turnovers, able to convert them into seven points. First was a jumper by Charette, followed by Palma, and then Bastian with a three-point shot. As the quarter ended, the two teams would head into the final quarter of the game tied 49-49.

The Penmen got off to a quick start in the fourth quarter as they scored the first eight points, unanswered until Bastian had a fast-break pass to Fogle to put the Ravens back on the board in the fourth with just under six minutes to play.

Charette able to bring the Ravens within one point with just under four minutes to go, but the Penmen answered with a run of six straight points, capped by a layup from junior forward Sara Ryan, which made it a seven-point game (63-56) with 44 seconds to play. SNHU made four of its six free throws in the final minute to seal the deal in the 67-58 victory.

Leading the scoring the Penmen were Ryan with 17 points and freshman forward Kylie Lorenzen with 18 points. The Penmen shot 60% (12-20) from the line and 44.8% (26-58) from the field. Southern New Hampshire was able to put up 27 points off the bench, 38 points in the paint and 19 points off Ravens turnovers.

Leading Franklin Pierce in scoring was Charette with 14 points, while she also grabbed 10 rebounds to complete the double-double. She was followed by Natalie Bastian with 11 points and Jasmyne Fogle with 13 points. The Ravens went 66.7% (6-9) from the line, and shot 38.7% (24-62) in the field. Franklin Pierce put up 32 points in the paint, 17 off Penmen turnovers and had 19 points off the bench.

The Ravens return home Sunday, Nov. 29 at 3 p.m., when they play host to Bloomfield College at the Fieldhouse.
