Women’s Basketball Sails Past Adelphi in First Home Game of New Year, 59-44

RINDGE, N.H. (January 6, 2016) -- Two members of the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team collected double-doubles in Wednesday night's Northeast-10 Conference win against Adelphi Panthers. Senior forward Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass.) had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and junior forward Jasmyne Fogle (Bridgeport, Conn.) had 10 points and 13 rebounds, as their efforts helped pave the way for the Ravens win, 59-44, at the Fieldhouse.

With the win, the Ravens advance to 7-5 overall and 4-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Panthers head home with a record of 10-5 overall and 3-4 in the conference.

The Ravens opened the game, following a Panthers basket by senior forward Samantha Brenner, with a three-pointer at the hands of freshman guard Sarah Middleton (Barrington, R.I.). Following the Ravens score, Adelphi had a 6-0 run, with Brenner leading the way with four of those points while, teammate and graduate student guard Ashley Gomez closed out the streak with a layup, making the score 8-3.

Senior guard Dyamond Gardner (Cambridge, Mass.) broke the 6-0 run with a layup, which Gomez followed up with one of her own. Following this, Charette brought the Ravens back within striking distance, as her first bucket of the night cut the gap to 10-9.

With just over a minute to go in the first quarter, senior guard Natalie Bastian (Branford, Conn.) hit a three-pointer to gain the Ravens' first lead of the game, 14-12. After a jumper by Brenner to tie, Charette spoke last with a layup to end the first quarter, with the score 16-14 in favor of Franklin Pierce.

Junior forward Sierra Clark re-tied the game early in the second, but Bastian was right behind her to re-gain the lead, at 18-16. From there, the game fell into a five-minute scoring lull, where the Ravens had seven turnovers in a hurry, but Adelphi was not able to capitalize on the opportunities. With four minutes remaining in the half, Gomez made a layup and then hit two free throws, pushing the Panthers once again into the lead, 21-18.

Junior guard Dana Campbell (Merrick, N.Y.) had the next seven points of the game, on a pair of layups and a three-pointer, as the Ravens crept into the lead yet again, 25-21. The final shot of the half was a jumper by Clark, to put the score at 25-23 going into the second half.

The half started with an 11-4 run by Franklin Pierce, with Charette and Fogle putting in a pair of buckets each, and Bastian topping it off with a three-pointer, as the Ravens stretched the lead to 36-27.

A good move by Clark resulted in a layup to spark a quick 5-0 Panthers run. Bastian, Gomez and Charette hit back-to-back-to-back layups, leaving Franklin Pierce with a 42-34 with just over one minute left in the third. Charette finished the scoring for the quarter with two good free throws, to send the game to the fourth at 44-34.

The fourth quarter started with a 4-0 Panthers run at the hands of Clark, before a pair of free throws each for Charette and Bastian further increased the Raven lead to 50-40, with just under four minutes left in regulation.

Two more free throws for Charette and one for Bastian were followed by a layup by Brenner, but in the final minute of the game, three more pairs of free throws for the Ravens would solidify their lead and give them their largest lead of the game, at 17 points. Adelphi couldn't recover and ultimately fell on the road to Franklin Pierce, 59-44.

Franklin Pierce was led in scoring by Charette with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Fogle added 10 points and 13 rebounds, and Bastian chipped in 15 points.

The team totaled 24 turnovers, and shot 40.4% (19-47) from the field, while going 73.9% (17-23) from the line, and getting 19-points off the bench.

The Panthers heavy hitters were Clark with 15 points, Brenner with 14 and Gomez with 12. Adelphi only shot 25.9% (15-58) from the field and 70% from their 20 times at the line.

The Ravens travel to American International on Jan. 13 at 5:30 p.m. and return home on Jan. 16, when they will host Saint Rose at 1:30 p.m.
