Five in Double Digits as Women’s Basketball Upsets Bentley 75-71

WALTHAM, MASS. (December 9, 2014) – Franklin Pierce Women's basketball had five double digit scorers Tuesday evening as they battled with Bentley University at the Dana Center.  

Franklin Pierce advances to 4-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play, with a 6-2 overall record; Bentley falls to 1-4 in Conference play, with a 4-4 record. 

The Ravens held the lead for the first seven minutes of the game until sophomore Jen Gemma's layup would give the Falcons the lead, 14-13, at 12:59. Senior Jessica Hurd (Kegworth, London) would post back to back baskets to regain a one point lead for the Ravens, 17-16 on the scoreboard with 10:32 left in the first half.

Freshman Jemma Thacker (Aldgate, Australia) and junior Natalie Bastian (Branford, Conn.) would each post a three within a minute of each other, 22-18. Seconds later, at 7:26, the Falcons would start a rally that would continue until the end of the half, securing their lead with under two minutes in the half. The scoreboard would read 35-30 as the teams went to their locker rooms. 

Trailing by five at the half, a three-pointer by Thacker would give the Ravens a one-point lead just before the 15 minute-mark, 44-43. However, the Falcons would take back the lead until under nine minutes with a jump shot by Hurd to tie the game 57-57.

A minute later, the Ravens would lose their lead with a free throw by freshman Lauren Green. Another three by Thacker would give the Ravens a two-point advantage with just over four minutes to play, 67-65.  

The game would be tied with 41 seconds on the clock, but junior Kara Charette's (Fairhaven, Mass.) jump shot at the 25 second mark , followed by her two free throws with just seconds on the clock, gave the Ravens as 75-71 victory over the reigning Division- II National Champions.

Macchi Smith would post 16 points with seven rebounds six assists, and two steals. Jen Gemma would have 16 points on the board with seven rebounds, two blocks and two assists, while Lauren Green would have 16 points with five rebounds, two assists and two steals. 

Jemma Thacker had 16 points, three rebounds, and two steals, while Kara Charette had 16 points with two rebounds and three assists, with two blocks. Jessica Hurd posted 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Senior Dyamond Gardner  (Cambridge, Mass.) posted 13 points with eight assists, three rebounds, and four steals, and Natalie Bastian also had 13 points, with one rebound and one steal. Graduate student Kate McDonald (Fall River, Mass) added seven assists.

The Ravens return to their home court next year, Saturday January 3rd to face Assumption at 1:30 pm in Conference play
