Last-Second Three-Pointer Sinks Women’s Basketball in Double-Overtime Loss at SNHU, 65-64

Hurd contributes 18 points, 12 rebounds

Hurd MANCHESTER, N.H. (February 10, 2015) – With time ticking down in double overtime on Tuesday night, Southern New Hampshire University freshman guard Catherine Stinson drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to give SNHU a 65-64 victory over the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference play at the SNHU Fieldhouse. For Franklin Pierce, graduate student forward Jessica Hurd (Kegworth, England) led the way with her fifth double-double of the season, coming up with 18 points and 12 rebounds, including nine offensive boards.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 12-8 (10-7 Northeast-10), while Southern New Hampshire improves to 11-13 (5-12 Northeast-10) on the season. Franklin Pierce had won eight of the last 10 matchups between the schools, and suffered its first loss to the Penmen since December 2013.

After a back-and-forth regulation, both teams were tied at 55-55 heading into the first overtime. Penmen senior guard Brooke Springfield opened the scoring of the first overtime just 31 seconds in, and it looked like that might be all the Penmen would need, as the points dried up for both sides. Ultimately, Hurd tied the game for Franklin Pierce with a layup with under a minute to go to cap each team at two points in the five-minute overtime and send the game into double overtime tied at 57.

With 64 seconds remaining in the second overtime, Franklin Pierce junior forward Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass.) sank a jumper to put the Ravens ahead, 64-62. Following a turnover by Southern New Hampshire, the Penmen fouled Franklin Pierce with 25 seconds left, setting up a one-and-one free-throw situation, but the Ravens could not convert. With 19 seconds remaining and Southern New Hampshire in possession of the ball, the Penmen took a timeout to set up the eventual game-winner.

Southern New Hampshire worked the ball around the perimeter until it wound up in the hands of junior forward Erin Doherty on the right wing with less than three seconds to play. Doherty took a dribble inside the arc against Charette, while turning to hand the ball off to Stinson behind the arc, screening Stinson's defender, junior guard Natalie Bastian (Branford, Conn.), in the process. Bastian fought around Doherty and got a hand in Stinson's face as the latter released the shot with less than a second remaining, but to no avail. The horn sounded with the ball in flight and the three-point heave found the net, giving SNHU the one-point win. Stinson would finish the game with eight points, including going 2-for-3 from behind the three-point arc.

In addition to Hurd, Franklin Pierce had two other players reach double-digits on the night. Bastian followed up her 26-point showing from Saturday at Assumption with 11 points and also grabbed seven rebounds in the defeat. Charette finished the game with 12 points and eight rebounds.

SNHU was powered by the trio of sophomore guard Sara Ryan, graduate student forward Victoria Wiseman and Springfield. Ryan posted a double-double for the Penmen, going for 13 points and 11 rebounds, while chipping in three steals. Wiseman was the game's leading scorer as she put home 19 points and came up a rebound short of the double-double with nine. Springfield finished the game with 14 points while only sinking four field goals on the night, as she went 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.

The Ravens return home for their next contest as they face Northeast-10 foe Adelphi University this Thursday, Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the Fieldhouse in Rindge.
