Sprint Football Shutout in Second Half, Falls at Chestnut Hill, 28-3

Brown

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. (November 3, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University sprint football team scored first on Friday night at A.A. Garthwaite Stadium, but did not score again. A first-quarter field goal from sophomore kicker Owen King (Athol, Mass.) was all the Ravens could come up with in their season finale. Chestnut Hill rattled off 28 unanswered points, including 21 in the second half, to post a 28-3 victory in cross-division Collegiate Sprint Football League play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce concludes its season at 3-4, while Chestnut Hill wraps up its campaign at 4-3.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring on its second drive of the game. The Ravens took over in great field position, at the Chestnut Hill 35-yard line, after a punt of just 20 yards by sophomore Dante Fuchs went out of bounds. Four plays later, a 15-yard run by sophomore back Kobie Smith (Leominster, Mass.) set up first-and-goal at the Chestnut Hill 2-yard line, but the Ravens could not find the end zone. Instead, Franklin Pierce went backwards to the 13-yard line over the next three plays and had to settle for a 34-yard field goal attempt. King put the kick through the uprights to stake the Ravens to a 3-0 lead.

Chestnut Hill answered and took the lead for good with a touchdown on the ensuing drive. Junior running back Raevon Floyd-Bennett had the signature play of the drive, with a 22-yard rush to convert a third-and-5 from midfield. Sophomore quarterback Michael Marino then tacked on a 15-yard scamper of his own, which ultimately set up his own two-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wideout Domoree Hill.

After a scoreless second quarter, the Griffins found the end zone again on their first possession of the second half, to push the lead out to 13-3. It was an extended, 13-play, 66-yard drive, which spanned 7:15. Marino completed a pass of 32 yards to sophomore wide receiver Jonathan Barber, as well as a strike of 24 yards to Hill on the drive, the latter of which kept the chains moving on a third-and-9. Ultimately, on third and goal from the 10-yard line, Marino hit Barber for 10 yards and the score.

The Griffins made it 21-3 with a touchdown and a two-point conversion to cap a drive which began in the third quarter and ended in the fourth quarter. Chestnut Hill marched 90 yards on just nine plays to all but put the game away. The big strike was the scoring play, as Marino connected with Hill for a 47-yard touchdown. Marino then hooked up with sophomore wideout Tyler Clayton for the two-point conversion.

Chestnut Hill capped things off on its very next drive, finding the end zone for a fourth time to create the 28-3 final. Marino hit Hill for 16 yards to convert a third-and-10 from the Griffins’ own 20-yard line, while Floyd-Bennett later ripped off a 22-yard rush. Marino capped things with a 19-yard touchdown pass, his fourth of the game, to Clayton.

Chestnut Hill held Smith -- the CSFL’s leading rusher by a wide margin -- to just 48 yards on 22 carries (2.2 yards per carry), with 16 of those yards coming on just one play. Freshman quarterback Jared Lubas (Salem, Mass.) finished the day 16-for-26 for 141 yards through the air, and was intercepted once and sacked once along the way. Freshman running back Tionne Brown (Turners Falls, Mass.) hauled in a game-best 10 catches for 86 yards.

Defensively, senior defensive back Ryan Becerra (Tempe, Ariz.) led the team with 11 tackles, including nine solo tackles, which was a game best. He was the only Raven in double digits in tackles, and added one tackle for loss along the way. Sophomore linebacker Bailee Johns (Fitzwilliam, N.H.) contributed nine tackles (eight solo), and was the only other Raven to factor in on more than five tackles.

For Chestnut Hill, Floyd-Bennett finished with 81 yards on 11 rushes (7.4 yards per carry). It was Marino who stole the show though, as he went 14-for-20 for 185 yards and threw four touchdown passes, while being sacked once. Hill hauled in two touchdowns as part of a five-catch, 71-yard day to lead the receiving corps.

Defensively for the Griffins, junior defensive lineman Brian Layden led all players with 13 tackles (eight solo), including five tackles for loss totaling 16 yards.
