Softball: Williams' Walk off Double Snaps Southern Losing Streak in 4-3 Win Over West Chester

MELBOURNE, FL (3/9/24) – The Franklin Pierce softball team broke a four-game losing streak Saturday afternoon during game two of their double header against the West Chester Golden Rams, 4-3.

Score: Franklin Pierce 4, West Chester 3. 
Records: Franklin Pierce 4-4 (0-0 NE10), West Chester 5-4 (0-0 PSAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Golden Rams started hot with a 2-run 1st Inning. Graduate infielder Grace Aguilar singled, scoring Graduate Outfielder Madison Melvin, then advanced to second on an error. Three batters later, junior outfielder Hailey Melvin singled to left, scoring Aguilar.  
  • The Ravens got on the board shortly after in the bottom of the 3rd. Junior outfielder Bella Williams (Phoenix, AZ) singled to left field, scoring sophomore infielder Kierra Warrix (Indianapolis, IN) and cutting the Golden Rams lead to 1. 
  • Both teams scored next in the 6th Inning. The Rams' fifth-year infielder Alexa Peterson singled advancing Haily Melvin to second and scoring sophomore outfielder Mairead Hopkins, giving the Golden Rams a 3-1 lead. The Ravens quickly answered courtesy of an RBI single by senior infielder Hailey Bigwood (Athol, MA) that scored senior catcher Ashley Cangiano (North Attleboro, MA) making the score 3-2. 
  • The Ravens then walked it off with a 4-3 victory because of a 2 RBI double from Bella Williams (Phoenix, AZ) that scored junior infielder Lita Vorseth (Mesa, AZ) and sophomore outfielder Savannah Arreguin (Pacoima, CA). 

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS 

  • The Ravens outhit the Golden Rams 7-6 and they did a better job of scoring runners on base, leaving only 5 runners stranded compared to the Golden Rams' 7.  
  • The Golden Rams also had 3 errors in the game compared to the Ravens' 1, helping the Ravens put runners in scoring position. 
  • Ravens' freshman pitcher Georgia Clough (Barriere, British Columbia) pitched the first five innings of the game, followed by Kennedy Morris (Stafford, CT) who entered in the sixth and closed out the game and earned the victory.  
  • Golden Rams' junior pitcher Makenzie Edwards started, pitching 5.2 innings and giving up 5 hits, 2 runs, and a walk. Sophomore pitcher Danielle Ciliberto came in relief for 1 inning and was credited for the loss, giving up 2 hits and 2 runs. 

UP NEXT FOR THE RAVENS: The Ravens wrap up their trip to Florida with two games tomorrow. The Ravens first play Mercy at 10:00 am followed by Molloy at 12:15 Sunday March 10th
