Softball: Ravens Kick Off Florida Trip with 4-1 Victory Over Mercy

VIERA, FL(3/7/24) -- The Franklin Pierce softball team continued their early season success in their first game of the Space Coast Spring Games with a 4-1 victory over the Mercy Mavericks on Thursday.  

Score: Franklin Pierce 4, Mercy 1. 
Records: Franklin Pierce 3-0 (0-0 NE10), Mercy 0-1 (0-0 ECC)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Ravens got off to a fast start scoring one run in the top of the 1st Inning. Senior catcher Ashley Cangiano (North Attleboro, MA) hit an RBI single that scored junior infielder Bella Williams (Phoenix, AZ), giving the Ravens a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Mavericks answered in the bottom of the 4th Inning when freshman infielder Allison Murphy reached 1st base on a Raven's infield error. The error would score Mavericks' senior outfielder Shannon Sisco off an unearned run, tying the game 1-1 after 4 innings. 
  • The game remained 1-1 until the top of the 7th Inning when the Ravens exploded for 3 runs. It started with a triple from senior infielder Jenna Murray (Wilbraham, MA). Sophomore Savannah Arreguin (Pacoima, CA) pinch ran for Murray as she scored courtesy of an RBI single off the bat of sophomore outfielder Andie Anderson (Phoenix, AZ). After that, junior infielder Lita Vorseth (Mesa, AZ) doubled, scoring Anderson for the second run of the inning. Junior infielder Bella Williams (Phoenix, AZ) then stepped up to the plate, also doubling, scoring Vorseth to make it 4-1.  

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS: 

  • The Ravens out hit the Mavericks 10-2, half of which came from the 7th Inning alone. 
  • Both teams had 1 error. The Mavericks scored their only run off the Ravens' error, giving them no earned runs in the game.  
  • Ravens' Senior pitcher Samantha Sylvester (Morris, CT) picked up her second victory of the season, pitching all seven innings, giving up 2 hits, 1 unearned run, a walk, and striking out 5 batters.  
  • Mavericks' Graduate pitcher Alexi Benson gave up 10 hits, 4 earned runs, a walk, and struck out 2 batters.  

UP NEXT FOR THE RAVENS:  The Ravens will play eight games in Florida with their next one set for later Thursday afternoon against Cedarville.
