Softball: Ravens Crack Open 2024 Season with Back-to-Back Wins Over Post

WATERBURY, C.T (3/4/2024) -- The Franklin Pierce softball team started the 2024 season off with a bang as they swept Post University in Monday afternoon's doubleheader at LaMoy Field. The Ravens won game one 17-5 and game two 7-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME 1:
• Franklin erupted with four runs in the top of the 1st. Senior catcher Ashley Cangiano (North Attleboro, MA) had an RBI double to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead. A few plays later, junior first basemen Anna Erikson (Temecula, CA) had a two-RBI single to make it 3-0 Franklin Pierce. On the next play, freshman infielder Danielle Belliveau (Baldwinville, MA) singled to left field, scoring Erikson to give Franklin Pierce a 4-0 lead. 
• In the bottom of the third, Post got on the board as graduate outfielder Samantha Riccardulli scored from third base on a wild pitch. On the next play, senior third baseman Jenny Riquelme singled to left field, scoring senior infielder Lily Tomasiello to cut the Ravens lead in half. 
• In the top of the fourth, Cangiano had a three-run home run to give Franklin Pierce a 7-2 lead. In the top of the seventh, the Ravens scored eight runs to secure game one, 17-5 over the Eagles. 

GAME 2:
•Franklin Pierce scored two runs in the top of the 1st. Cangiano had a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring sophomore infielder Kierra Warrix (Indianapolis, Ind.). Then junior outfielder Bella Williams (Phoenix, AZ) scored on a throwing error by senior right fielder Julia Maida. Cangiano had an RBI sacrifice fly to center field in the third inning, scoring Warrix to make it 3-0 Franklin Pierce. The Ravens added four more runs in the next two innings and picked up the 7-0 win over the Eagles to complete the doubleheader sweep. 

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS:
GAME 1:
• Senior pitcher Samantha Sylvester (Morris, CT) pitched four innings, gave up five hits, three runs, three walks, and struck out four batters. Sylvester picked up the win. Senior pitcher Sabrina Gonzalez (Chandler, AZ) came in relief, pitched two scoreless innings, and struck out one batter. Freshman Raylee Gilbert (Waterville, ME) made her Raven debut and closed out the game, striking out two batters.
• Warrix was two for five and scored three runs. Cangiano was two for four, scored three runs, and had four RBIs. Erikson was three for five, scored two runs, and had four RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Amy Jones (San Diego, CA) was three for five and scored two runs. 
GAME 2:
•Gonzalez pitched a complete game, where she threw five scoreless innings. She gave up four hits and one walk and struck out three batters. 
• Warrix went three for three, scored two runs, and had two RBIs. Williams went two for two and scored a run. Erikson went two for three and scored two runs. Junior infielder Lita Vorseth (Mesa, AZ) was two for three and scored a run. 
• Franklin Pierce scored 24 total runs. 

NEXT UP FOR THE RAVENS:
• The Ravens fly south to Melbourne, Florida for their next game on Thursday, March 7, as they take on Mercy College at 12:15 p.m., followed by Cedarville at 2:30 p.m.
