WORCESTER, Mass. (April 5, 2021) – The Franklin Pierce University softball team's five-game winning streak came to an end Monday afternoon as they were swept for the first time this season falling 2-1 in both games on the road to Northeast-10 Conference opponent Assumption College. Both losses dropped the Crimson and Grey to 8-4, 7-3 NE10 while the Greyhounds improve to 4-2, 4-2 NE10.

The Raven bats cooled down after starting the season hot as they combined to go 8-for-47 (.170) in both contests. Senior first baseman Gina Hinckley (Lancaster, Mass.) was 2-for-4 in both games with two walks, a run scored, and a solo home run. The home run was Hinckley's conference-leading fourth of the year and the RBI was her league-leading 12th. It was her 10th career tater as she ranks tied for second in program history on the all-time home run list (Jessica Furtado, Cassidy Sorenson, Cat Simmons).

Game One: Greyhounds 2, Ravens 1 (Final)

The Ravens amassed only one base knock in game one, a sophomore center fielder Ari Rodriguez (Clinton, Mass.) single. Rodriguez also stole a bag, her team-best fourth of the year. Freshman starter Sabrina Gonzalez (Chandler, Ariz.) started in the circle for Pierce and allowed five hits, two runs while striking out two batters. Abbey Primavera (Spring Hill, Fla.) came on in relief and three two hitless frames punching out one batter.

Assumption cracked the scoring column in the bottom of the second. Designated player Corin Mahan drew a leadoff walk and crossed home plate via a second baseman Summer Sheerin double for the early 1-0 lead.

Pierce deadlocked the game in the top of the third. Senior right fielder Jenna Curtis (Orange Park, Fla.) drew a lead-off walk, advanced to second due to a wild pitch, was sacrificed to third, and then scored on an error. It was the only Ravens run of the game. In the bottom of the frame, Hounds first baseman Alyssa Bialakis knocked home the go-ahead run with a single.

The hosts starter Erin Barry had a no-hitter going through six innings, but Rodriguez broke it up in the top of the seventh. Rodriguez couldn't come around as Assumption won 2-1.

Game Two: Greyhounds 2, Ravens 1 (Final)

Ravens third baseman Madi Killebrew (Dana Point, Calif.) and Hinckley each were 2-for-3 from the three and four spots in the lineup. Left fielder Alexis Briggs (Lockport, N.Y.) was 2-for-3 as well. Graduate left-hander Amelia Mamone (Averill Park, N.Y.) made her 84th appearance in the circle, two shy of breaking the program record. She was the starter and threw two innings punching out four batters. Cyrena Zemaitis (Goshen, Conn.) came on in relief and took the loss to fall to 5-1 on the year allowing two runs on three hits striking out five in four frames.

Hinckley started off the top of the second inning with a solo blast to center field putting FPU ahead 1-0 in the early going. Pierce had runners at first and second with one out, but they couldn't produce another run.

Over the next few innings, the Ravens didn't get a runner into scoring position until the top of the sixth when Killebrew reached third base. Rodriguez flew out and left the runner at third. With two away in the bottom of the sixth Mahan lofted a two-run johnson to move the Hounds ahead 2-1 late in the ball game. Briggs singled in the top of the seventh, but the pinch-runner was out at second on a fielder's choice and the Ravens failed to tie the contest.

Mia Nowicki earned the victory (2-1) tossing a complete game striking out three batters. Mahan went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Franklin Pierce returns to the Bisaccia Softball Complex on Saturday, April 17th for a conference doubleheader with no. 16 nationally-ranked Saint Anselm College at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.
