Softball faces sweep from AIC, drop doubleheader

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 10, 2015) – Junior Erin Wood (Dover, N.Y.) put together three of the teams total eight hits over two games on Friday afternoon, as the Franklin Pierce University Ravens were defeated by the American International College Yellow Jackets by final scores of 6-0 and 12-3 in a doubleheader taking place at Groff Field in Springfield, Mass. The games were home games for Franklin Pierce.

With the losses, the Ravens drop to 1-6 overall (1-5 Northeast-10), while American International improves to 4-14 (1-5 Northeast-10).

In game one, the ball went to freshman Jenna Rodriguez (New Egypt, N.J.) who was able to turn in a respectable 4.1 innings on the day, surrendering three earned runs. Her only major hiccup of the day was a solo home run given up to Alexa DiLeo to lead off the second inning. However, the offense of the Ravens continued their early season struggles, unable to plate a run.

The Ravens best chance to let one cross the plate was in the seventh, as Wood was able to collect one of her three hits, a double to the right field corner. After a single by junior Morgan Cahill (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) moved pinch runner Abbigael Cook (Greenville, R.I.) to third. That would be as far as the Ravens would get as they would be blanked in game one 6-0.

In the second game, the Ravens turned to yet another young gun in freshman Aubrey Bianco (Marlboro, N.Y.). Bianco would flourish and scrap through six innings, only giving up three runs up to that point. However, the wheels would come off come the seventh inning, as Bianco would surrender six more earned runs and not recording an out before making way for junior Mandi Adee (Kinderhook, N.Y.) to end the inning.

The Ravens would score two in the bottom of the seventh as freshman Samantha Bonvino (Milford, Mass.) reached on an error, followed by senior Alicia Dean (Danvers, Mass.) getting hit by a pitch. Freshman Cassidy Sorenson (Billerica, Mass.) would stroke a double to center field to score both runners. After the double, the game would be called to darkness.

Cahill would add two hits on the day as well for the Ravens, while junior Julie Gallagher (Flanders, N.J.) and Mikaela Ballmer (Birdsboro, Pa.) each collected a hit on the day as well.

The Ravens return to the diamond tomorrow, as they travel to Worcester to take on Assumption in a double header beginning at 3:30 p.m. The games will be played at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
