Softball Swept by Southern Connecticut in Friday's Doubleheader

Jamie Wiley belts three doubles in two combined games on Friday

RINDGE, N.H. (April 29, 2011) -- The Franklin Pierce University softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Southern Connecticut State on Friday at the FPU Softball Field in Rindge, N.H. SCSU won game one, 8-1, and then picked up a 10-0 triumph in six innings in game two. Franklin Pierce fell to 10-29 overall and 8-19 in the Northeast-10, while the Owls improved to 25-16 and 18-10 in league play.

In game one, freshman shortstop Jamie Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) led the Ravens offensive attack with a 3-for-4 performance including two doubles and a run driven in. She drove in the run with a double to left field in the third inning, as senior second baseman Emily Griffin (Leominster, Mass.) scored on the play. Griffin had reached base the previous at-bat, as she too, blasted a double to left field.

Rachel Allen (Hull, Mass.) got the start in the pitching circle and was saddled with the loss after she went 7.0 innings, yielding eight runs (only five earned) on 14 hits with one strikeout and three walks.

Southern Connecticut State scored two runs in both the first and second innings to jump out to an early 4-0 lead and would cruise onto victory from there. Kristin Whitley and Brittany Bucko each blasted home runs in the contest to lead the Owls' attack. Whitley had three hits and drove in a trio of runs in game one.

Brittany Hill earned the win in the pitching circle as she went 7.0 innings, giving up one run on eights with three strikeouts.

In game two, it was more of Whitley as she blasted a grand slam and belted a solo home run to lead the Owls to victory. Overall, Whitley went 5-for-10 on the day with eight runs driven in.

Jayme Larson took to the pitching circle for the Owls and limited the Ravens to just one hit in the contest to earn the win. The only Raven to touch Larson in game two was Wiley, who stroked a double to left-center field in the fourth inning.

Jessica Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) started in the circle for the Ravens and suffered the loss after going 7.0 innings and giving up 10 runs on 14 hits.

Franklin Pierce returns to action Saturday when the Ravens conclude their 2011 season by taking on Assumption in Worcester, Mass. in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
