Emily Griffin Breaks Program Record for Career Hits, but Softball Falls in DH to Adelphi on Sunday
Griffin has program-record 136 hits for her career
RINDGE, N.H. (April 10, 2011) -- The Franklin Pierce
University softball team was swept by Adelphi on Sunday in a
doubleheader at FPU Softball Field in Rindge, N.H. The Ravens
dropped game one, 11-4, and then fell, 8-0, in five innings in game
two. Franklin Pierce fell to 3-17 and 1-7 in the Northeast-10,
while Adelphi improved to 13-17 and 7-5 in league play.
Despite the losses, there was a historical moment in program
history as senior Emily Griffin (Leominster,
Mass.) broke the program record for career hits. She had
two hits in game one, and added another one in game two, to give
her 136 hits for her career. Griffin moved into first place, ahead
of former standout Lori Oleskewicz, who stroked 136 hits from
1993-96.
One of Griffin's two hits in game one was an RBI single back up
through the middle of the infield, and her lone hit in game two was
a double to the wall in left field to lead off the bottom of the
first inning.
After spotting Adelphi a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in
game one, Franklin Pierce pushed a pair of runs across in the
bottom half of the frame to go up 2-1. Griffin singled to lead off
the inning and Jayme Bilafer (Concord, Mass.)
followed by reaching base as she was hit by a pitch. Ashley
Noke (Cumberland, R.I.) brought in both baserunners with a
two-run double later in the frame.
However, Adelphi got back the run in the second inning and scored
six more runs over the third and fourth innings to take control of
the game and earn the win. Shay Craig and Deandra Leo each homered
for the Panthers to spark the offensive attack in the win.
Leighann Bell got the win in the pitching circle for the Panthers
as she came on in relief with zero outs in the first and worked 7.0
innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on nine hits with six
strikeouts and a walk.
Franklin Pierce starting pitcher Jessica Wiley (Cape
Vincent, N.Y.) took the loss as she went seven innings
giving up 11 runs (only four earned) on 15 hits with three
strikeouts and a walk.
Adelphi continued the hot-hitting in game two as the Panthers
picked up the eight-run win in five innings. Craig and Leo, again,
sparked the offensive attack with a homer each. Katie Andrews got
the win in the pitching circle as she limited the Ravens to just
three hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks.
Rachel Allen (Hull, Mass.) was saddled with the
loss for Franklin Pierce as she went 3.0 innings and gave up eight
runs (five earned) on 11 hits.
Franklin Pierce returns to action Monday when the Ravens travel to
Waltham, Mass. to face Bentley in a doubleheader beginning at 3
p.m.
