Second game postponed to Thursday

Kayla Johnson Kayla Johnson threw a six-hit shutout at Massachusetts Lowell on Tuesday afternoon.

LOWELL, Mass. (April 27, 2010) – Junior right-hander Kayla Johnson (Hudson, N.H.) threw a six-hit shutout and sophomore third baseman Meaghan O'Neal (Littleton, Mass.) drove home the only run of the game in the sixth inning on Tuesday afternoon to lead the Franklin Pierce University softball team to a 1-0 victory over Massachusetts Lowell in Northeast-10 Conference play at River View Field. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to inclement weather and will be made up on Thursday, April 29 at 4 p.m.

With the victory, Franklin Pierce falls to 14-24 (9-16 Northeast-10), while Massachusetts Lowell falls to 25-19 (12-12 Northeast-10) with the loss.

After five scoreless innings, Franklin Pierce came up with the game's only run in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, junior second baseman Emily Griffin (Leominster, Mass.) clubbed a double to center field. She would score two batters later on an RBI single to right field by O'Neal.

Johnson threw the shutout to pick up the win (6-11) in the circle for Franklin Pierce. She allowed six hits, walked five and struck out three. Johnson worked in and out of trouble all day, as she stranded 10 runners on base, including six in scoring position.

Sophomore right-hander Elyssa Boris took the ball and took the loss (8-10) for Massachusetts Lowell. She allowed one run on four hits, walked one, threw a wild pitch and struck out three.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, April 28, when they return home to host Le Moyne in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Rindge, N.H.
