(April 24, 2010) – Senior right-hander Breanne Gleason threw two shutouts, including a no-hitter, on Saturday afternoon to lead No. 11 nationally ranked New Haven to a doubleheader sweep of the Franklin Pierce University softball team in Northeast-10 Conference play at UNH Softball Field. New Haven won the first game, 8-0, in six innings via the eight-run rule and took the second, 2-0.

With the losses, Franklin Pierce falls to 13-22 (8-14 Northeast-10), while New Haven improves to 30-4 (18-2 Northeast-10) with the victories.

In the first game, New Haven scored the only run it would need in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, senior designated player Meghan Walter knocked a single into left-center field, moved to second on a wild pitch and came in to score on an RBI double to center by sophomore catcher Allison Vaughan.

The Chargers extended the lead to 2-0 with another run in the bottom of the third. Junior left fielder Chelsea Harold reached on a fielder's choice that was the second out of the inning, stole second and scored on an RBI single by freshman shortstop Christina Gelardi.

New Haven added two runs in the fifth and tallied four more in the sixth to bring the eight-run rule into effect and came away with the 8-0, six-inning victory. In the fifth, Harold worked a walk and Gelardi came up with a single before both later scored on an error. In the sixth, sophomore right fielder Shannon Angehr had an RBI single and Cruz singled and later scored on a passed ball. Later, Gelardi drove a two-run triple to center field to give New Haven the 8-0 advantage and end the game.

Freshman right-hander Lindsay Hodges (Sherburne, N.Y.) took the ball in the first game and took the loss (2-4) for Franklin Pierce. Over 5.2 innings, she allowed eight runs (six earned) on nine hits, walked five, threw a wild pitch and struck out one.

Gleason tossed her first shutout of the day to pick up the win (24-3) in the circle for New Haven. In six innings, she allowed two hits, walked two and struck out six.

In the second game, New Haven scored the only two runs of the contest in the bottom of the first inning. Harold led off with an infield single and stole second before Gelardi walked and Gleason singled to center to load the bases. Walter then drove in Harold with a ground ball which Franklin Pierce could not record an out on. Later in the inning, another ground ball allowed Gelardi to come in to score on an error.

Sophomore right-hander Jessica Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) went into the circle and took the loss (6-7) for Franklin Pierce in the second game. Over six innings, she allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, walked one and struck out two.

Gleason tossed a no-hitter to pick up the win (25-3) for New Haven. She walked two and struck out seven.

The Ravens return to the field on Sunday, April 25, when they travel to Southern Connecticut State for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Pelz Field in New Haven, Conn. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Wednesday, April 28 against Le Moyne at 3 p.m.
