Courtney Jacobs Courtney Jacobs struck out 13, one shy of her career high, in the first game of a doubleheader against Dowling on Friday afternoon.

LEOMINSTER, Mass. (April 11, 2009) – Sophomore pitcher Jamie Stalter (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) struck out 10 and threw a five-pitch shutout on Friday afternoon to lead Dowling to a 2-0 victory over the Franklin Pierce University softball team in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Lassie League Field. Dowling would later complete the doubleheader sweep with a 1-0 win in the second game. Senior pitcher Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) struck out 13, one shy of her career high, in defeat for Franklin Pierce in the first game.

Dowling scored the only run it would need in the first game in the top of the third inning. Sophomore second baseman Lisa Compitello (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) singled to left field, took second on a wild pitch and scored two batters later on a double to center field by senior left fielder Kacie Pinto (Islip, N.Y./Islip).

Dowling created the 2-0 final with an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, senior first baseman Jackie Hannan (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) reached on an error by the second baseman and was lifted for sophomore pinch runner Devin O’Brien (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton). O’Brien came all the way around to score from first when freshman catcher Emily Slack (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) followed with an RBI double to right field.

Jacobs threw a complete game and took the loss (2-9) for Franklin Pierce in the first game. Over seven innings, she gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits, issued no walks, threw a wild pitch and struck out 13.

Stalter tossed the shutout to pick up the win (5-0) in the circle for Dowling. She surrendered five hits, walked two, hit a batter, threw a wild pitch and struck out 10.

In the second game, Dowling scored the only run of the contest in the top of the second inning. Hannan led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and stole third. She then came home to score two batters later on a double to left field by senior center fielder Keri Boystak (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst).

Sophomore Kayla Johnson (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) went the distance in the circle for Franklin Pierce and took the loss (0-5) in the second game. Over seven innings, she gave up one run on three hits, walked two and struck out two.

Senior Stephanie Plochochi (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) tossed a shutout in the second game to pick up the win (6-5) for Dowling. She allowed just three hits, issued no walks and struck out six.

The Ravens (4-18, 0-8 Northeast-10) return to the field on Saturday, April 11, when they host Southern Connecticut State in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Franklin Pierce Softball Field in Rindge, N.H. Dowling (22-14, 6-1 East Coast) returns to action on April 14 at home against Concordia.
