CLERMONT, Fla. (March 19, 2009) –
The Franklin Pierce University softball team concluded its spring
trip to Florida with a pair of non-conference, neutral-site losses
at the National Training Center on Thursday afternoon. Franklin
Pierce was defeated by Philadelphia, 3-0, to start the day. Later
in the afternoon, the Ravens fell to Merrimack, 4-0.
In the first game of the day, Philadelphia notched single runs in
the bottom of the first, fourth and sixth innings to come away with
the victory. The Franklin Pierce offense was held to three singles,
one each from sophomore second baseman Emily Griffin (Leominster,
Mass./Leominster), senior infielder Elaine Matthews (Roslindale, Mass./Archbishop
Williams) and senior Jackie
Prybella (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield).
In the circle for Franklin Pierce in the first game, freshman
Jessica Wiley (Cape Vincent,
N.Y./Thousand Islands) started, threw the first six
innings and took the loss (2-1). She gave up three runs (two
earned) on six hits, walked two and struck out five.
In the game against Merrimack, the Warriors scored a run in the
top of the first, two in the top of the third and one more in the
top of the seventh to defeat Franklin Pierce. The Ravens were held
to a single each from Griffin and Prybella, who both recorded their
second hits of the day.
Senior pitcher Courtney Jacobs
(Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) tossed a complete game for
Franklin Pierce and took the loss (3-2) in the second game. Over
seven innings, she gave up four runs on 10 hits, walked nobody and
struck out four.
The Ravens (4-6, 0-0 Norteast-10) return to the field on Saturday,
March 28, when they travel to New York Institute of Technology for
a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon at
NYIT Softball Complex in Old Westbury, N.Y. Franklin Pierce’s
first home games are a doubleheader scheduled for Sunday, March 29
against Southern New Hampshire at noon.
