Le Moyne takes 11-0 win to begin the day, then cruises to 13-2 victory in game two

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (April 13, 2008) – Le Moyne College belted out 26 hits and scored 24 runs as the Dolphins took a pair of games from Franklin Pierce University in a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the Niland Athletic Center. Le Moyne took the first game, 11-0, and earned the sweep with a 13-2 win in game two.

Sophomore Kelly Schweikert (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) led the way for Le Moyne by hitting 5-for-6 with four runs scored and four runs batted in. Senior Sarah Reed (DeWitt, N.Y./ Jamesville-DeWitt) went 4-for-6 with four runs scored and four RBI, while sophomore Danielle VanGorder (Vestal, N.Y/Vestal) had three hits, drove in four and scored three for the Dolphins.

Senior captain Kate Surgen (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) and freshman Emily Griffin (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) each had two hits on the day for Franklin Pierce, while Griffin added one RBI. Sophomore Kristen Tracy (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Walter Panas) also went 1-for-4 with a home run, a run scored and a run driven in for the Ravens.


Le Moyne 11, Franklin Pierce 0 (five innings)

In the front end of the doubleheader, Le Moyne scored 11 runs in the first three innings and coasted to an 11-0, five-inning victory.

Reed went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI in the game, while Caitlin O’Neill (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) went 2-for-2 with three runs batted in and Schweikert had two hits and two RBI for the Dolphins.

Senior Caylinn Christophersen (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) held the Ravens in check for five innings, scattering four hits while striking out three and walking one to earn the win (5-3). Freshman Kayla Johnson (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) did not last long in the circle for the Ravens, as she recorded only one out while giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits to take the loss (2-7).

After the Ravens went down in order in the top of the first, Le Moyne scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the early lead. Reed drove in the game’s first run with an RBI single to left center, and Schweikert delivered a key two-run single to increase the lead to three. The Dolphins continued to threaten, but O’Neill was thrown out at the plate to dull the rally.

Le Moyne blew the game open in the third inning against freshman righthander Caitlin Beagan (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim), scoring seven times thanks to eight singles. Five different players drove in runs for the Dolphins in the inning, with O’Neill and Reed each delivering two-run singles to aid the attack.

Senior Becky Aalto (Hubbardston, Mass./Gardner) pitched well for the Ravens in relief of Beagan, giving up four hits and allowing one inherited runner to score in 1.2 innings of work.


Le Moyne 13, Franklin Pierce 2 (five innings)


Le Moyne continued the offensive show in the day’s second game, scoring eight runs in the first inning to take a 13-2 victory in five innings.

VanGorder and Kortney Meadows (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) each had two hits and three RBI to pace the Le Moyne attack, while Schweikert hit a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI in the game.

Katelyn Fowler (Sandy Creek, N.Y./Sandy Creek) started the game and earned the win (2-0) for Le Moyne, giving up three hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Junior Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) started and took the loss (1-10) for Franklin Pierce while lasting 1.1 innings, giving up 10 runs (eight earned) on seven hits.

Sophomore Bailey Phillips (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Arcadia) led off the bottom of the first with a walk and VanGorder followed with a two-run home run, and Reed made it back-to-back shot with another homer to make the lead 3-0. After a two-run double by Schweikert, Meadows launched the third home run of the inning later in the frame, driving in two and providing the final runs of the inning.

The Ravens were down 10-0 in the top of the third inning when Griffin got the Ravens on the board with an RBI double to right field, scoring classmate Erin Clark (Fort Ann, N.Y./Fort Ann). The Ravens got another run in the top of the fourth, when Tracy led off the frame with her first home run of the year, but the team could get no closer.

Franklin Pierce (3-23, 2-10 NE-10) stays on the road with a pair of games at Saint Anselm College on Tuesday beginning at 3 p.m. Le Moyne (24-8, 11-1 NE-10) hosts Assumption College for a conference doubleheader Tuesday at 3 p.m.
