Cross Country: Summa Takes 1st Place; Men's Team Finishes 3rd at NCAA DII East Regional Championships

HOPKINTON, N.H. (11/4/2023) – The Franklin Pierce University cross country program hosted the 2023 NCAA East Regional Championships Saturday afternoon and junior runner Wondu Summa (Burlington, Vt.) finished in first place for the second year in a row. As a team, the men's program finished third overall.   

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The men's 10K race kicked off at 1:15PM at the Hopkinton Fair Grounds. Wondu Summa was the first to cross the finish line with a final time of 30:44.13, which was nine seconds faster than the runner up from Southern Connecticut State.
  • Junior runner Ryan Outerbridge finished up in the top ten after he crossed the finish line in 31:24.63, landing him a 9th place finish.
  • Outerbridge and junior runner Ryan Walker (Seabrook, N.H.) both earned All-Region.
  • As a team, the men's program grabbed 3rd place overall with 86 points. 
    • The team's top 5 runners were in the top 30
    • Runner Average: 31:55
    • Average Mile: 5:09
  • For the women's program junior runner Meghan Sheline (Southington, Conn.) was team's top finisher after she grabbed 44th with a final time of 24:04.12 for the 6k race.
  • Overall Winners:
    • Men's: Southern Connecticut State
    • Women's: Southern Connecticut State
  • The championships hosted by Franklin Pierce at the Hopkinton Fair grounds welcomed a total of 372 student athletes from 43 programs.
