EMMITSBURG, Md. (August 31, 2018) – Freshman Riley Fenoff (Danville, Vt.) opened his collegiate career with a top-15 finish, in a 79-runner field laden with Division I talent, on Friday afternoon to lead the way for the Franklin Pierce University men's cross country team at the Mount St. Mary's 5k Duals. As a team at the season-opening meet, the Ravens went winless in the dual-meet format, falling to George Washington, Johns Hopkins, host Mount St. Mary's and Maryland-Baltimore County.

Friday's meet was not scored in the traditional method of scoring cross country meets. Instead, each team was scored on a head-to-head basis against each of the other schools in attendance. With lower scores being better, Franklin Pierce suffered defeats of 17-40 to George Washington, 18-43 to Johns Hopkins, 17-44 to Mount St. Mary's and 18-45 to UMBC. George Washington defeated all comers at the meet, posting a 4-0 record, while UMBC went 2-1-1, Mount St. Mary's finished 2-2 and Johns Hopkins went 1-2-1, in front of the Ravens at 0-4.

"Today was all about getting work in," said head coach Zach Emerson after the meet. "The season is three months long, and we look for progress each week, knowing we will get better with each workout we complete and with each race we run."

Individually, Fenoff finished the 5K course in 16:08.45, which put him in 12th place. In all, the Ravens put three runners in the top half of the field, as junior Jason Reed (Foxborough, Mass.) followed in 24th place (16:40.46) and junior Anthony Pizzo (Peabody, Mass.) was in the 31st position (16:55.65). A noted absence for the Ravens was sophomore Hugo Arlabosse, (Marseille, France), who was given an extra week of rest to open the season, as he was competing into July at the national level in his native France over the summer.

"Freshman Riley Fenoff performed very well on a very hot and humid day, proving he could certainly challenge to be one of the top freshmen in the region by season's end," added Emerson. "Jason Reed and Anthony Pizzo had solid performances as well."

The Franklin Pierce scoring five was rounded out by junior Tyler Hayes (Kings Park, N.Y.) in 41st (17:23.77) and junior Walker John (Boscawen, N.H.) in 45th (17:32.76). Three more Ravens found their way into the top 50 finishers, one after the other: sophomore Antonio Rua (Burrillville, R.I.) in 47th (17:39.42), sophomore Ryan Ducrow (Amesbury, Mass.) in 48th (17:45.01) and freshman Will Aylward (Peabody, Mass.) in 49th (17:55.65).

The Ravens return to action on Saturday, Sept. 8, when they travel to Northampton, Mass., for the Smith College Invitational.
