Men’s Track & Field Finds Success at Lowell and Princeton

LOWELL, Mass. (April 22, 2017) – Senior B.J. Smith (Concord, N.H.) established a new school record in the not oft-contested two-mile on Saturday, which was among the bright spots for the Franklin Pierce University men's track & field team at the George Davis Invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Meanwhile, a season-best for senior Cory Cataldo (Tewksbury, Mass.) in the 110-meter hurdles highlighted the day for the Ravens at the Larry Ellis Invitational, hosted by Princeton University.

In Lowell, Smith's school record checked in at 9:24.78, which was good enough to place fifth in the two-mile.

A pair of Ravens turned in marks which were relevant at the Northeast-10 Conference level in the Mill City. In the long jump, junior Rindal Pierre-Canel (Randolph, Mass.) won the long jump with a mark of 6.75 meters, which is currently good for third in the NE10 and fourth in the East Region. Meanwhile, sophomore Jaris Neville (Atlanta, Ga.) moved into a tie for ninth in the NE10 in the 200-meter dash, as he finished third, with a time of 22.47 seconds. Pierre-Canel made it a double on Saturday, as he also won the triple jump, by posting a mark of 13.74 meters.

In the hammer throw, senior Mark Josselyn (Halifax, Mass.) narrowly missed the program record he set on Friday, as he unleashed a throw of 47.44 meters to place ninth. In a highly-competitive shot put field, which saw four NEICAAA Championships qualifying marks laid down, freshman Domenic Branco (Pelham, N.H.) placed 10th, with a respectable throw of 13.38 meters.

Meanwhile, select Ravens were in action at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational. Cataldo led the way, as he moved into third in the NE10 and sixth in the East Region in the 110-meter hurdles. He put together a time of 15.59 seconds to place 21st. In the 400 meters, senior Dage Minors (Hamilton Parish, Bermuda) moved up to ninth in the NE10, with a run of 50.17 seconds, which was good for 24th.

Another strong showing for Franklin Pierce came in the 4x400-meter relay, which moved up to second in the NE10 in the event. A quartet of junior Nicholas Jacques (Westfield, Mass.), Cataldo, freshman Trevor Guay (Londonderry, N.H.) and Minors posted a time of 3:19.88 to finish fourth.

Two other individuals competed at Princeton, as Jacques finished 21st in the 100-meter dash (11.16), while senior Jon Holmes (Albany, N.Y.) finished 21st in the unseeded edition of the 800 meters (1:56.42).

The Ravens return to the track on April 27-29, when they travel to Philadelphia for the storied Penn Relays, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
