Junior notches personal bests in 100m, long jump, high jump

Biunno PHILADELPHIA (April 21, 2015) – Junior Vinny Biunno (Montgomery, N.Y.) of the Franklin Pierce University men's track & field team ranked second, out of five competitors, on Tuesday after the first day of the decathlon at the prestigious Penn Relays, hosted by University of Pennsylvania at historic Franklin Field.

Biunno amassed 3508 points through the decathlon's first five events, leaving him 2694 points off of the NCAA Championships provisional qualifying standard with five events remaining. He is also 220 points behind Austin Jamerson of Cornell, who leads the way at 3728 points through the first day. Behind Biunno are Patrick Schlosser of Wesley in third (3383 points), David Karabinos of Cornell in fourth (3240) and Sean Collins of Penn in fifth (3018). Robert Poepperling of Misericordia started, but withdrew after the long jump.

Biunno's day started with a personal best in the 100-meter dash, as he ran an 11.36 to finish second and collect 782 points. He followed with another personal best, and another second-place finish in the long jump, with a leap of 6.70 meters to garner 743 points. Biunno then placed fourth in the shot put, with a heave of 9.32 meters to collect 445 points. He returned to second place in the high jump, where he posted another personal best by clearing 1.98 meters for 785 points. Biunno rounded out his day by placing third in the 400 meters with a time of 51.35 seconds, which was good for 753 points.

The Penn Relays decathlon will conclude on Wednesday at Franklin Field. The Ravens are later scheduled to compete in four events on Thursday at the Penn Relays, two on Friday and one on Saturday.
