Men's Tennis Celebrates Senior Day, Earns First Win of Spring over Assumption, 6-1

RINDGE, N.H. (4/11/23) – The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team picked up its first win of 2023 spring season, besting Assumption University with a 6-1 victory in Northeast-10 Conference play on Tuesday afternoon at the FPU Tennis Courts.

Tuesday was also senior day for Pierce men's tennis, who improves to 4-11 (1-5 NE10) overall on the year with the triumph. Assumption, with the loss, drops to 6-10 (0-6 NE10) overall.

The Ravens dominated in doubles to open the day's action, claiming the point with a full sweep through all three positions. Senior pairing Preston Gordon (Essex Junction, Vt.) and Joshua Arnold (Scarborough, Trinidad & Tobago) were the first to finish with a 6-4 win at the No. 1 position. Then, Joe Herin (Tias, Spain) and Nkrumah Patrick (Tunapuna, Trinidad & Tobago) earned a 6-3 win against Assumption's Jakob Bordt and Jose Silas as the No. 2 pair. Finally, Alejandro Ortiz (Madrid, Spain) and Paul McLellan (Nairobi, Kenya) defeated Brady Ryan and Alan Nguyen, 6-2 to clinch the doubles point.

The momentum from doubles carried over to singles for Pierce, with Assumption's only win coming from the No. 1 spot from Bernardo Balancho in three sets (6-4, 0-6, 6-3). Preston Gordon soundly defeated Assumption's Adrian Toderascu by scores of 6-3, 6-4 in No. 2 singles, while Alejandro Ortiz was victorious in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 7-6) from the No. 3 position over Jose Silas. The No. 4 and No. 5 positions saw matching 6-2, 6-4 wins from Orlando Guerrero (Pachuco, Mexico) and Joshua Arnold over their respective Assumption opponents. To seal the victory for the Ravens, Paul McLellan finished the job in two sets over Rhonzo Olaechea, winning by scores of 7-5 and 6-2.

The Ravens will be back next Sunday for their regular season finale against Daemen University. The match is set for a 5:00 p.m. first serve.
