Dominant Singles Matches Key 5-4 Win for Men’s Tennis at AIC

Three Ravens win in both singles and doubles play

Brewer Brewer led the Franklin Pierce singles effort Wednesday at AIC with a convincing win at second singles.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 16, 2013) – Junior Christopher Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) dropped just one game while winning at second singles on Wednesday afternoon as part of three dominant singles wins for the Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team, which picked up a 5-4 win in Northeast-10 Conference play at American International.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 4-7 (3-6 Northeast-10), while American International falls to 1-12 (1-9 Northeast-10).

Franklin Pierce took two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead it would not relinquish the rest of the afternoon. AIC senior Cass Schwab and freshman Gustavo Franceli squeaked out an 8-6 victory over Brewer and senior Pat Gilhuly (Killingworth, Conn.) at first doubles, but the Ravens rolled at second and third doubles. At second doubles, sophomore Jared Taylor (Pelham, N.H.) and junior Mark Petrie (Pembroke, Mass.) went past junior James Worrall and graduate student Timothy Zoma, 8-3. At third doubles, sophomore Drew Bennett (Rindge, N.H.) and junior Aras Banevicius (Canton, Conn.) bettered junior Jason Popek and freshman Alfie Cleave, also by an 8-3 score.

The two teams then split the six singles matches, with all but third singles going in lopsided fashion. At third singles, Taylor lost a pair of tight sets to Worrall, as the latter picked up a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory. In its three singles victories, Franklin Pierce dropped a total of just four games. At second doubles, Brewer rolled through Franceli, 6-1, 6-0. At fourth singles, Petrie beat Zoma by an identical, 6-1, 6-0 score. At fifth singles, Bennett went past Popek, 6-2, 6-0.

The Ravens return to the court on Saturday, April 19, when they host Adelphi in a Northeast-10 Conference match at 10 a.m.
