Brewer posts win in wild second singles match

Brewer Brewer fell in a tight match at first doubles, but then battled back for a three-set victory at second singles on Sunday afternoon.

WESTON, Mass. (September 16, 2012) – Freshman Jared Taylor (Pelham, N.H.) won at both first singles and second doubles, while junior Mikie Connor (Newburyport, Mass.) won at both fifth singles and third doubles on Sunday afternoon to lead the Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team to a 6-3 win on the road against Regis (Mass.) in non-conference play.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 1-2 (0-2 Northeast-10), while Regis opens the season at 0-1 (0-0 New England Collegiate). The win was the first at Franklin Pierce for Head Coach Marty Morrissey.

Franklin Pierce took two of the three available doubles points to open up the afternoon. At second doubles, Taylor teamed with freshman Drew Bennett (Rindge, N.H.) to notch an 8-3 win over Regis senior Sophorn Nop and junior Andy White. Meanwhile, at third doubles, Connor joined freshman Brandon Turmelle (Rochester, N.H.) to squeak out an 8-6 win over senior Mouhamed Diallo and freshman Austin Nace.

The Ravens nearly made it a clean sweep in doubles play, as sophomores Chris Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) and Keith Bujak (Lyndeborough, N.H.) locked horns with sophomore Michael Beluch and Hunter Cawley at first doubles. The match went the distance, as it was tied 8-8 through 16 games, necessitating a tiebreak, which was won by the Regis pair by the smallest of margins, 7-5.

For Brewer, the doubles showdown proved to be just a warm-up for his rollicking second singles tussle with Cawley. Cawley eked out a 7-6 win in the first set after taking the tiebreak, 7-5. Brewer stormed back with a convincing, 6-1 win in the second set, which sent the match to a tiebreak set to decide things. In the tiebreak, Brewer came out on top, 10-6, to take the match.

Meanwhile, at first singles, Taylor quickly dispatched Beluch, 6-1, 6-4. The other two victories for Franklin Pierce on the afternoon came at fourth and fifth singles, from Bujak and Connor against Nop and Regis senior Matt Smolko, respectively. Bujak and Connor would win their matches by identical scores of 6-2, 6-0.

The Ravens return to the court on Wednesday, Sept. 19 when they return home to host Bentley in a Northeast-10 Conference match at 4 p.m. in Rindge.
