Taylor picks up singles win

Morrissey Head Coach Marty Morrissey wrapped up his inaugural season as Franklin Pierce's skipper on Sunday afternoon at Saint Michael's.

COLCHESTER, Vt. (April 14, 2013) – Sophomore Mark Petrie won in both third doubles and fifth singles play on Sunday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team suffered a 6-3 setback on the road against Saint Michael's in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce wraps up its season at 3-7 (2-7 Northeast-10), while Saint Michael's finishes at 4-7 (3-6 Northeast-10).

Franklin Pierce went 1-2 in doubles play to open the day on Sunday afternoon. The Ravens picked up a point in third doubles, as Petrie and freshman Drew Bennett (Rindge, N.H.) posted an 8-6 win over senior Kenny Vassallo and freshman Charlie Merry. Franklin Pierce nearly took two of the three doubles points, as junior Pat Gilhuly (Killingworth, Conn.) and sophomore Chris Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) put forth a valiant effort at first doubles before falling, 9-7, to senior Eric Parziale and freshman Steve Thomson.

The Ravens added a pair of points in singles play with straight-set wins at both third and fifth singles. At third singles, freshman Jared Taylor (Pelham, N.H.) was dominant in a 6-1, 6-0 win over sophomore Billy Wood. At fifth singles, Petrie bettered senior Lyle Nichols, 6-4, 6-3.

Franklin Pierce just as easily could have come away with a 6-3 win -- or 7-2, including the tight first doubles match -- as each of the three singles matches it lost went the distance to three sets, including a pair which featured tiebreakers. At second singles, Brewer locked in a wild, back-and-forth affair with Saint Michael's junior Nick Bosco. Brewer took the first set, 6-4, before dropping the second, 6-2. The third set went to a tiebreak, which was tight as well, with Bosco ultimately pulling out the 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory. At fourth singles, the tiebreak came in the first set, with Bennett falling to senior Chris Moskal, 7-6 (7-5). Bennett bounced back with a 6-4 win in the second set before Moskal took the third to finish off the 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-1 victory.
