Men’s Tennis Whitewashes Saint Anselm, 9-0

All six Ravens win in both singles and doubles play

Gilhuly Between doubles and singles play on Saturday against Saint Anselm, Gilhuly lost only two games in a pair of blowout wins.

RINDGE, N.H. (April 13, 2013) – Junior Pat Gilhuly (Killingworth, Conn.) and sophomore Chris Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) combined for an 8-1 win at first doubles before dropping only a combined four games in wins at first and second singles, respectively, on Saturday as the Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team picked up a 9-0 win over Saint Anselm in Northeast-10 Conference play at Franklin Pierce.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 3-6 (2-6 Northeast-10), while Saint Anselm falls to 3-10 (1-8 Northeast-10).

All six Franklin Pierce players won in both singles and doubles play on Saturday, led by the efforts of Gilhuly and Brewer. The tandem blitzed through Saint Anselm sophomore Kyle White and senior William Condon, 8-1, at first doubles to start the day. The Ravens took all three doubles points, as freshman Jared Taylor (Pelham, N.H.) and sophomore Nikolaus Pellegrino (Pawcatuck, Conn.) bettered seniors Joseph Zucchi and Michael Hanna at second doubles, 8-4, and sophomore Mark Petrie and freshman Drew Bennett (Rindge, N.H.) posted an 8-1 win at third doubles against freshman John Joyce and senior Matthew Greeke.

The Ravens continued to roll in singles play, taking all six points there as well. Gilhuly and Brewer were dominant in the top two singles matches, as the former fired past Zucchi, 6-1, 6-0, at first singles and the latter took down Condon at second singles, 6-1, 6-2. Taylor needed time to take the first set from Hanna at third singles before putting together a 6-4, 6-2 win, while Bennett took care of White at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-0. The most competitive match of the day came at fifth singles, where Petrie won big over Greeke in the first set, 6-1, before Greeke took the second set, 6-4. Petrie picked up a 10-3 win in the tiebreak set to take the match. Pellegrino finished off the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Joyce at sixth singles.

The Ravens return to the court on Sunday, April 14, when they travel to Saint Michael's to wrap up the season with a Northeast-10 Conference match at 2 p.m. in Colchester, Vt.
