Ravens back in action on Oct. 2 at Bentley

EASTON, Mass. (September 25, 2011) – The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team was defeated, 9-0, in its Northeast-10 Conference opener at Stonehill on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-1 (0-1 Northeast-10), while Stonehill opens the season 1-0 (1-0 Northeast-10).

Though Stonehill would sweep the match, Franklin Pierce put up a battle throughout the afternoon. At first doubles, senior Ben Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) and sophomore Pat Gilhuly (Killingworth, Conn.) nearly took the very first point of the day for the Ravens, though they were ultimately clipped by Stonehill junior Chris Martin and senior Aaron Bergeron, 9-7.

Gilhuly would later play a wild match against Martin at second singles. Martin breezed to a 6-0 win in the first set, but Gilhuly answered with a 6-0 win of his own in the second set before Martin took the tiebreak, 10-4, to win the match. Meanwhile, at third singles, freshman Chris Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) took Bergeron to a tiebreak in the first set, but would eventually drop a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 decision.

For Stonehill, all six players won in both doubles and singles play on Sunday, led by freshman Eric Ringstad, who stormed to a 6-2, 6-0 win at first singles after teaming with sophomore Nick Hyzak for an 8-3 win at second doubles.

The Ravens return to the court on Sunday, Oct. 2, when they travel to Bentley for a Northeast-10 Conference match at 3 p.m. in Waltham, Mass. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Sunday, Oct. 9 against Saint Michael's at 1 p.m.
