Men’s Tennis Puts Away Regis (Mass.), 8-1, to Open Season

Five Ravens victorious in both singles and doubles play

Gilhuly Gilhuly dropped only five total games while posting wins at first doubles and second singles in Sunday afternoon's win over Regis.

RINDGE, N.H. (September 18, 2011) – Senior Ben Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) and sophomore Pat Gilhuly (Killingworth, Conn.) teamed up for an 8-3 win at first doubles before posting straight-set victories at first and second singles, respectively, on Sunday afternoon to lead the Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team to an 8-1 win over Regis (Mass.) in non-conference play.

With the season-opening win, Franklin Pierce starts its season at 1-0 (0-0 Northeast-10), while Regis falls to 1-1 (0-0 New England)

The Ravens opened play on Sunday by sweeping through doubles play, including dominant victories at both first and second doubles. While Brewer and Gilhuly teamed for their 8-3 win over Regis sophomore Dan Berdichevsky and freshman Mike Beluch, senior Sam Aubin (Manchester, N.H.) and freshman Chris Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) stormed to an 8-2 win over juniors Matt Smolko and Sophorn Nop at second doubles. Sophomore Tyler Colombo (Gardner, Mass.) and freshman Keith Bujak (Lyndeborough, N.H.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over sophomores Andy White and Jon Dost at third doubles.

It would be much of the same in singles play, as Franklin Pierce took five of the six matches, including straight-set wins in each of the first four flights. At first-through-third singles, Ben Brewer, Gilhuly and Chris Brewer combined to drop just seven games over six sets. Ben Brewer notched a 6-0, 6-4 win over Beluch, Gilhuly breezed to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Berdichevsky and Chris Brewer steamed to a 6-0, 6-1 win over White. Later, at sixth singles, Colombo notched an 8-4 win over Dost in the pro-set format.

Smolko picked up the lone point of the day for Regis with a 9-7 win in the pro-set format at fifth singles.

The Ravens return to the court on Sunday, Sept. 25, when they travel to Stonehill for their Northeast-10 Conference opener at 2 p.m. in Easton, Mass.
