Men’s Tennis Wraps Up Season With 6-3 Win at Assumption

Gilhuly, Brewer brothers win at top three singles

Brewer Chris Brewer picked up a win at second doubles on Friday at Assumption.

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 13, 2012) – Sophomore Pat Gilhuly (Killingworth, Conn.), freshman Chris Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) and senior Ben Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) won at first, second and third singles, respectively on Friday afternoon to lead the Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team to a 6-3 road win over Assumption in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the win, Franklin Pierce concludes its season at 5-7 (4-7 Northeast-10), while Assumption falls to 3-12 (1-9 Northeast-10). The five overall wins and four Northeast-10 victories are the most for Franklin Pierce since the 2004-05 campaign, when the team finished as the Conference runner-up. The Ravens will finish eighth in the Northeast-10, just two matches back of the sixth and final berth in the Northeast-10 Championship.

The Ravens opened the match by taking two of the three points available in doubles play. At first doubles, Gilhuly and Ben Brewer teamed to come up with an 8-5 win over Assumption freshman Joseph Esposito and senior Nathan Lafond. Meanwhile, at third doubles, senior Sam Aubin (Manchester, N.H.) and freshman Keith Bujak (Lyndeborough, N.H.) dispatched senior Jerry Reilly and junior Richard Jakiel, 8-1.

The doubles wins left Franklin Pierce needing three singles points to take the team match, and it would get four. Gilhuly and the brothers Brewer would take care of business in short order, as they each posted a straight-sets victory as the Ravens swept the top three singles flights. At first singles, Gilhuly squeaked out a 7-5 win in the first set against Esposito, before putting away the second, 6-1. At second singles, Chris Brewer needed a second-set tiebreak to finish off junior Matt Drolet, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). At third singles, Ben Brewer sailed by Jakiel, 6-1, 6-0. Bujak scored the final point of the day for Franklin Pierce, at sixth singles, as he led Reilly, 6-2, 3-0, when the latter retired.

Junior Pat Murray picked up wins in both doubles and singles play for Assumption on the afternoon. He teamed with Drolet to eke out a 9-8 (8-6) win at second doubles, and later posted a win at fourth singles as well.
