Gilhuly wins at first doubles and first singles

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 9, 2012) – After teaming with senior Ben Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) to pick up an 8-2 win at first doubles, sophomore Pat Gilhuly (Killingworth, Conn.) rallied from a first-set loss to pick up a win at first singles as well on Monday afternoon to lead the Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team to a 9-0 victory over American International in Northeast-10 Conference play at AIC.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 4-6 (3-6 Northeast-10), while American International falls to 0-10 (0-8 Northeast-10).

Behind the Brewer/Gilhuly team's win over junior Jakub Simicek and freshman James Worrall at first doubles, the Franklin Pierce second doubles team of freshman Chris Brewer (Brattleboro, Conn.), Ben's younger brother, and senior Andrew Wong (Hong Kong) swept to an 8-0 win over freshmen Jason Popek and Chandler Long. The Ravens also took the third doubles point by default.

The Ravens picked up a point at sixth singles by default as well, before winning the other five matches. Gilhuly had the toughest go of it, as he locked horns with Worrall at first singles. Gilhuly dropped the first set, 6-4, before storming back with a 6-0 sweep in the second set. With momentum on his side, Gilhuly took the tiebreak, 10-4, to win the match.

Elsewhere, Chris Brewer notched a 6-0, 6-2 win over Simicek at second singles and sophomore Tyler Colombo (Gardner, Mass.) notched a 6-4, 6-3 win over sophomore Derek Alves in third singles. Later, Wong defeated Popek, 6-0, 6-1 at fourth singles and freshman Keith Bujak (Lyndeborough, N.H.) swept away Long at fifth singles, 6-0, 6-0.

The Ravens return to the court on Wednesday, April 11, when they travel to Bentley for a Northeast-10 Conference match at 2 p.m.
