Gilhuly took the first set from his opponent at first singles on Friday afternoon against Merrimack.RINDGE, N.H. (March 30, 2012) – The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to Merrimack in Northeast-10 Conference play on Friday afternoon at Franklin Pierce.
With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-4 (0-4 Northeast-10), while Merrimack improves to 9-5 (5-0 Northeast-10).
Sophomore Pat Gilhuly (Killingworth, Conn.) chipped in one of the strongest efforts for Franklin Pierce on the afternoon, as he was the only Raven to win a set, taking the first set, 6-4, from Merrimack sophomore Chris Barnhart at first singles. However, Barnhart rallied with a 6-2 win in the second set to send the match to a tiebreak, where he ultimately gutted out a 10-8 win.
Another strong showing for the Ravens came from the second doubles team of freshman Chris Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) and senior Sam Aubin (Manchester, N.H.), who locked in a battle with Barnhart and freshman Vince Bellino before ultimately falling, 8-5.
All six Merrimack players were victorious in both singles and doubles on the afternoon, led by senior Max Eppley, who rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 victory at second singles after teaming with senior Sean Pahler to take a 5-2 lead at first doubles before the Franklin Pierce pair had to retire due to injury.
The Ravens return to the court on Sunday, April 1, when they travel to Le Moyne for a Northeast-10 Conference contest at 11 a.m. in Syracuse, N.Y.
