Brewer, Gilhuly win singles matches

COLCHESTER, Vt. (April 11, 2011) – Junior Ben Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) won at first singles and freshman Pat Gilhuly (Killingworth, Conn.) won at second singles on Monday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision at Saint Michael's in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-9 (1-9 Northeast-10), while Saint Michael's improves to 2-7 (2-7 Northeast-10).

Saint Michael's opened the match by sweeping doubles play to jump to a 3-0 lead. Gilhuly and senior Dan McDonough (Manchester, N.H.) hung close at second doubles for Franklin Pierce, as did junior Andrew Wong (Hong Kong) and freshman Mikie Connor (Newburyport, Mass.) at third doubles, though both teams ultimately fell, 8-5.

Franklin Pierce drew to a one-point deficit at 3-2 with wins in the top two singles flights. At first singles, Brewer tallied a 7-5, 6-4 win over Saint Michael's freshman Nick Bosco. Meanwhile, Gilhuly was dominant at second singles, as he rolled to a 6-1, 6-4 win over sophomore Eric Parziale. However, Saint Michael's won the final four singles matches to finish off the 7-2 victory.

For the Purple Knights, senior Ryan Magee was the only player to pick up wins in both doubles and singles play. He teamed with Bosco for an 8-2 win at first doubles before notching a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory at fifth singles.

The Ravens return to the court on Wednesday, April 13, when they wrap up the season with a neutral-site, Northeast-10 Conference match against Pace in East Hartford, Conn.
