Brewer, Gilhuly win singles; Gilhuly, McDonough team for doubles win

RINDGE, N.H. (October 9, 2010) – Junior Ben Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) and freshman Pat Gilhuly (Killingworth, Conn.) were victorious at first and second singles, respectively, on Saturday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team was defeated, 6-3, by Assumption in Northeast-10 Conference play at Franklin Pierce.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 0-3 (0-3 Northeast-10), while Assumption improves to 1-2 (1-2 Northeast-10) with the victory.

The Ravens picked up their first point of the afternoon at second doubles, as Gilhuly teamed with senior Dan McDonough (Manchester, N.H.) to pick up an 8-4 victory over Assumption sophomore Matt Drolet and senior Bobby Hurley. Meanwhile, at first doubles, Brewer and junior Sam Aubin (Manchester, N.H.) put up a strong fight, but ultimately fell, 8-5, to Assumption seniors Jimmy Mongello and Tariq Sheikh.

Later in the day, Franklin Pierce picked up wins in the top two singles matches. Brewer posted a dominant, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Mongello at first singles, while Gilhuly led at second singles, 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 2-1 when Sheikh retired. Elsewhere, Aubin put together a strong showing, but fell to Drolet, 6-3, 6-4, at third singles.

Sophomore Rich Jakiel was the only Assumption player to win at both singles and doubles on Saturday afternoon. He posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at sixth singles after teaming with junior Nate LaFond earlier in the day to pick up an 8-2 win at third doubles. Sophomore Pat Murray posted a convincing, 6-0, 6-0 victory at fifth singles for the Greyhounds.

The Ravens return to action on Sunday, Oct. 10, when they remain home to host Le Moyne in a Northeast-10 Conference match at 11 a.m.
