MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 8, 2011) – Junior Ben Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) and freshman Pat Gilhuly (Killingworth, Conn.) notched wins at first and second singles, respectively, while Gilhuly teamed with senior Dan McDonough (Manchester, N.H.) to pick up a win at second doubles on Friday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision at Saint Anselm in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-7 (1-7 Northeast-10), while Saint Anselm improves to 2-7 (2-7 Northeast-10).

Saint Anselm opened the day by taking two of the three doubles matches for a 2-1 lead heading for singles play. Gilhuly and McDonough picked up the only doubles point for the Ravens with their 8-5 win over Saint Anselm juniors Alex Schultheis and Joe Dougherty. Brewer and junior Sam Aubin (Manchester, N.H.) put up a fight at first doubles, but ultimately fell, 8-5.

In singles play, Franklin Pierce jumped out with a pair of points to take a 3-2 lead by winning at both first and second singles. In the top flight, Brewer dropped the first set to Schultheis, 6-3, but took the second, 6-3 as well, before squeaking out a 10-8 win in the tiebreak. At second singles, Gilhuly eked out a 7-5 win in the first set against Saint Anselm sophomore Joseph Zucchi before breezing through the second set, 6-1, to take the match.

However, Saint Anselm would win at third through sixth singles to come away with the 6-3 victory in the match. Sophomores William Condon (first doubles/third singles) and Michael Hanna (third/fourth) and junior Liam Concannon (third/fifth) all won in both doubles and singles play for Saint Anselm on the afternoon. Hanna, in particular, was dominant, as he teamed with Concannon for an 8-0 win in doubles play before coasting to a 6-1, 6-0 win in his singles match.

The Ravens return to the court on Sunday, April 10, when they travel to Merrimack for a Northeast-10 Conference match at 1 p.m. in North Andover, Mass.
