Mens Tennis Falls To Stonehill, 9-0, In Season-Opener
Ravens visit Southern New Hampshire on Sunday
RINDGE, N.H. (September 26,
2009) – The Franklin Pierce University men’s
tennis team was defeated, 9-0, by Stonehill in Northeast-10
Conference play at Franklin Pierce on Saturday afternoon. With the
win, Stonehill improves to 1-1 (1-0 Northeast-10), while Franklin
Pierce opens its season 0-1 (0-1 Northeast-10).
After Stonehill swept through the three doubles matches, Franklin
Pierce made things interesting in the top two singles matches. In
first singles, freshman James Kraner (Glastonbury,
Conn.) staved off a pair of match points against Stonehill
senior Mike Mashkevich in the second set and won the second-set
tiebreaker, 7-4. With the team match already decided by this point,
the two substituted a 10-point tiebreaker for the third set, which
Mashkevich won, 10-7.
Likewise for the Ravens, sophomore Ben Brewer (Brattleboro,
Vt.) pulled out a second-set tiebreaker, 7-3, against
Stonehill senior Mike Leone to even the match at a set apiece.
Leone took the 10-point tiebreaker, 10-6.
In all, six Skyhawks were victorious in both singles and doubles on
Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Aaron Bergeron dropped only one game
in his match at third doubles before sweeping through fifth
singles, 6-0, 6-0.
The Ravens return to action on Sunday, Sept. 27, when they travel
to Southern New Hampshire for a Northeast-10 Conference match at 11
a.m. in Manchester, N.H.
