Kraner wins at both singles and doubles

RINDGE, N.H. (April 7, 2010) – The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team was defeated, 6-3, by Saint Anselm in Northeast-10 Conference play at Franklin Pierce on Wednesday. With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 0-6 (0-6 Northeast-10), while Saint Anselm improves to 4-3 (4-3 Northeast-10) with the victory. Freshman James Kraner (Glastonbury, Conn.) won at both first singles and first doubles in the loss for Franklin Pierce.

Kraner kicked things off by teaming with sophomore Ben Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) to defeat Saint Anselm sophomore Alex Schultheis and senior John Oberlander at first doubles, 8-4. However, Franklin Pierce would lose at second and third singles to head into singles with a 2-1 deficit.

Kraner was victorious in first singles as well, as he pushed past Saint Anselm senior Ryan Garrette, 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore Ryo Miyazaki (Tokyo, Japan) picked up the third point of the day for Franklin Pierce when he picked up a 10-3, tiebreak win over Saint Anselm freshman Will Condon. Miyazaki had lost the first set, 6-3, before battling to a 7-5 win in the second set. The two played a tiebreaker in lieu of a full third set, as the overall team match had already been determined.

Freshman Joseph Zucchi was the only player to win at both singles and doubles for Saint Anselm. He teamed with Garrette to score an 8-2 victory at second doubles, then defeated Franklin Pierce sophomore Sam Aubin (Manchester, N.H.), 6-0, 6-1 in third singles.

The Ravens return to the court on Saturday, April 10, when they travel to Assumption for a Northeast-10 Conference match at 11 a.m. in Worcester, Mass.
