Miyazaki picks up pair of points for Ravens

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (February 14, 2010) – The Franklin Pierce University men’s tennis team was defeated, 6-3, by Pace in Northeast-10 Conference play in East Hartford, Conn. on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Ryo Miyazaki (Tokyo, Japan) won both his matches on the day, at third doubles and sixth singles. With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 0-4 (0-4 Northeast-10), while Pace opens its season 1-0 (1-0 Northeast-10) after not competing in the fall portion of the season.

In doubles, Miyazaki teamed with freshman Kevin Mooiman to upend seniors Matt Schaefer and Jose Caceres of Pace, by a score of 8-4. At first doubles, freshman James Kraner (Glastonbury, Conn.) and sophomore Ben Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) kept things close before falling to sophomore Ignacio Ortiz and junior Dan Klein, 8-5.

Brewer would pick up a point for Franklin Pierce in second singles, as he zipped past Klein, 6-0, 6-2. Miyazaki picked up the final point of the day, with an 8-2, pro-set victory over Pace’s Kevin Jones at sixth singles.

Ortiz led the way for Pace, with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Kraner in first singles, in addition to his doubles victory. Freshman Khari Linton and sophomore Andrew Feola also picked up two points each for Pace.

The Ravens return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 27, when they travel to Le Moyne for a Northeast-10 Conference match at 4:30 p.m. in Syracuse, N.Y.
