Southern New Hampshire Edges Franklin Pierce, 5-4

RINDGE, N.H. (March 19, 2007) - Southern New Hampshire University overcame a 2-1 deficit following doubles play to claim a 5-4 victory over Franklin Pierce in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action this evening.

Southern New Hampshire senior Pedro DePaula (Rolandia, Brazil) rallied for a three-set victory over Franklin Pierce junior Austin Gardella (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) to seal the victory. After Gardella breezed to a 6-1 win in the first set, DePaula took the second set, 7-5, before edging Gardella 7-5 in a third set tiebreak. Sophomore Samuel Gould (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) and freshman Andrew McFarland (Windham, Maine/Windham) also collected singles victories for the Penmen, who collected two points by default.

Sophomores Roland Oganyan (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) and Matt Robinson (Bedford, N.H./Manchester West) were both double-winners for the Ravens. Oganyan posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles and combined with junior Ryan Strayer (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Enfield (Conn.) HS) for an 8-6 decision at No. 2 doubles. Robinson notched a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles after teaming with Gardella for an 8-5 triumph at No. 1 doubles.            

Franklin Pierce (1-1, 1-1 NE-10) returns to action on Monday, March 26, when it visits Bryant University at 3 p.m. Southern New Hampshire (2-2, 2-2 NE-10) hosts Stonehill College next Tuesday, March 27, at 4 p.m.
