Franklin Pierce Fires Past Southern New Hampshire, 9-0
MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 2, 2002) - The Franklin Pierce men's tennis team notched its second straight Northeast-10 Conference win with a 9-0 victory over Southern New Hampshire University this evening.
Junior Michael Hoffner (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win over Southern New Hampshire's Carl Lovgren at #1 singles and went on to post a 8-0 victory at #1 doubles with teammate Ricky Sanford (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell). Sanford also won his singles match in two sets at the #2 spot.
Sophomore Maciej Szpakowski (Cutchougue, N.Y./Mattituck), junior Art Shannon (Danvers, Mass./Danvers), freshman Ryan Jones (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and senior Pat Teague (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) also recorded wins in their singles matches to help the cause.
The win gives Franklin Pierce the 8-6 advantage in the annual "101 Challenge" series, a head-to-head competition between the two rivals. Franklin Pierce claimed the inaugural "Challenge," 9-5, during the 2000-01 academic year.
Franklin Pierce (7-6, 3-2 NE-10) returns to action on Friday, when it travels to Bloomsburg, Pa. to participate in the Bloomsburg Duels. Southern New Hampshire (0-5, 0-5 NE-10) next hosts Merrimack College in a Northeast-10 Conference match at 3:30 p.m.
