Second-Half Foray Sends #1 Men's Soccer Past Assumption, 5-0

RINDGE, N.H (10/15/2022) --- The #1 Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team poured on the goals in the second half, netting four to storm past the Assumption Greyhounds by a final score of 5-0 on senior night at Sodexo Field.

With the win, Franklin Pierce moves to 14-0-1 (7-0-1 NE10) having posted their sixth straight shutout. On the losing side, Assumption falls to 5-4-3 (3-2-3 NE10) with their second consecutive loss to a Northeast-10 opponent.

In the first half, the Ravens outshot the Greyhounds 7-3, with both teams playing well defensively. The Greyhounds kept the pressure on the Ravens through the majority of the half, but ultimately surrendered the evening's first goal in the 29th minute. The scorer, Marc Lopez (Valencia, Spain), notched his sixth goal of the season off a purposeful pass inside the box by Braudilio Rodrigues (Lisbon, Portugal), burying it passed the Assumption netminder. The Ravens would carry the 1-0 advantage into the second half.   

In the second half, the Ravens came out strong strong with an 8-1 shots advantage over the Greyhounds. To add some insurance in the 69th minute, graduate midfielder Jonas Cervera Anchel (Chiva, Spain) beat out the Greyhound defense with his fourth goal of the season, extending the Raven lead to 2-0. Shortly thereafter, senior Joao Valente (Averio, Portugal) collected his first goal as a member of the Ravens after winning a footrace to a loose ball against the Assumption goalkeeper, sliding a shot into a wide-open goal for a 3-0 lead. On both goals, Braudilio Rodrigues collected assists on each, bringing his match total to three on the evening for a new single-game career best.

In the 80th and 89th minute of play, Rodrigo Vaza (Torres Verdes, Portugal) scored a pair of goals for his third and fourth on the year, capping the offense for the evening at 5-0 Ravens. His first goal was unassisted, with Joao Valente applying the helper on the second goal.  

The Ravens outshot the Greyhounds 15-4 through the full 90 minutes of action. Senior keeper Kosta Maniatis (Montreal, Quebec) got the nod in goal and picked up his eleventh win and eighth shutout of the season. Assumption goalkeeper George Dixon IV made four saves in the loss, and moved to a 3-2-3 record. 

Franklin Pierce has three games remaining in their regular season, and will hit the road north to Manchester, New Hampshire, where they will face in-state rival St. Anslem on Wednesday, October 19th, with kickoff at 3:30 pm.
