First-Half Barrage, Second-Half Insurance Allow Men’s Soccer to Cruise Over Dowling, 5-1

Ross, Barnett each notch first collegiate goal

SHIRLEY, N.Y. (September 9, 2015) – Three first-half goals staked the Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team to a 3-1 lead on Tuesday night, before two second-half goals put the game away, as the Ravens rolled to a 5-1 win over Dowling at Golden Lions Field. Five different players scored for Franklin Pierce en route to the non-conference victory.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 1-1-0 (0-0-0 Northeast-10), while Dowling falls to 0-2-0 (0-0-0 East Coast). The victory marked the first win at Franklin Pierce for head coach Roy Fink.

After being shutout in their season opener on Saturday, goals came early and often for the Ravens on Long Island on Wednesday night. Freshman midfielder Lloyd Ross (London, England) got the fun started in the 11th minute, with his first collegiate goal. Senior forward Marius Preber (Jessheim, Norway) fed the ball to Ross, who drove the ball home into the lower-left corner of the net.

Preber would pick up a marker of his own in the 17th minute, after he was set up by a through ball into the box from junior midfielder John Lochhead (Walpole, Mass.). Preber then beat the keeper to the right side for his first goal of the season.

Dowling quickly got one back in the 19th minute to briefly cut the deficit to 2-1. Freshman midfielder Kevin Lamm notched his first career goal, off of an assist from junior forward Alex Hailes.

Franklin Pierce would reclaim the 3-1 lead in the 22nd minute, with the game's third goal in a span of five minutes. The goal would be the final score of the first half and came off of a corner kick. Graduate student midfielder David Magee (Lurgan, Ireland) picked up the assist after freshman back Jordan Barnett (Grimsby, England) finished his first collegiate goal inside the near post.

The Ravens would score the only two goals of the second half to stretch the lead to its 5-1 final. In the 58th minute, graduate student forward Quincy Appah (Accra, Ghana) took a through ball from Ross and slotted his shot into the lower-right corner for his first goal of the season. In the 74th minute, Appah sent a cross into the box which senior midfielder Lorris Cortijo (Paris, France) finished off on one touch to cap the scoring.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan LeGuyader (Jersey, United Kingdom) played the first 69:13 in goal for Franklin Pierce and made three saves against four shots on goal to pick up the win (1-1-0). Junior goalkeeper Aidan Abolfazli (Worcester, Mass.) went the rest of the way and stopped both shots on his net.

At the other end of the field, freshman Scott Flores (0-1-0) finished with six saves against 11 shots on goal in a losing effort for Dowling.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 12, when they return home to host Molloy in a non-conference contest. Game time for Franklin Peirce's home opener is set for 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
